Some folks have these reoccurring dreams where someone is chasing them and they can't get away, or where they are back at school and can't remember what classes they are taking. Some even dream of falling or drowing. Not me. My dreams are about friggin' bucks that I can't seem to shoot.
It happens about this time every year. I remember one from last year where I was lying in wait of a pair of giant whitetails and could see them coming from a distance. At the last minute, they appeared on the other side of a pasture fence, not on my property. The neighbor shot them both, right before my eyes.
Last night I woke up in a panic twice. The first time I was dialed in on a good buck climbing up a steep hillside across a small valley. I read my drop chart and dialed my turret for 425yds. At the shot, dirt flew to his left. My hunting partner saw the same. I fired again and missed. After the buck disappeared, I unscrewed my windage cap and found that someone had spun it 5MOA to the left. That woke me up at 2:00AM.
The next one woke me up at 4:00AM and involved my actually dropping a nice buck in his tracks as he dashed across a shooting lane. When I made it to him, I found that the side of the rack I had seen was enormous, but the other side was just a broken stub. When I came back to load him up on my ATV, a bear had eaten both hams and the backstraps.
What is going on in my noggin and why can't I ever win? My wife thinks I'm crazy. Whatever it is, I've got it bad.....
