You got a great deal...the mounts alone are worth $250...

Sounds like you got an EG. Schnoble fore end?

Made in 1951 or 52..There should be 2 numbers and a letter in an oval on the front of the lever boss. If you can make out the letter then we can tell you when it was made. It should be a C or a D.

ok just picked up another 99 from the same gunsmith. the s/n is 671xxx and i think the boss code is 19d (could be 19b or 19f). it has a pistol grip and schnoble forend with checkering.the problems are: the blueing is at 40 percent, the casehardening is at 25 percent, the stock is at 60 percent and it has been d&t'ed for a sling and weaver mounts. it has a weaver marksman 1"x4x on it. i bought it for 120 dollars. you think it will make a good shooter? i think it may be a 99eg.

It may make a fine shooter. At $120 you don't have to worry you could part it out and come out just fine. Bore condition which you didnot indicate may be most critical.

Is he a good gunsmith? If he prices his work like he prices his rifles he has to be the cheapest smith in the USA! Sure doesn't know the value of a 99.

671XXX would be a 1952.

I've got a couple in my data that have the same date code, it's 19D. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
