Great Uncle Izzy passed away last weekend at the age of 96. It's hard to say we, as a family, experienced a loss. Uncle Izzy, my grandfather, and my great grandfather, left a rich legacy. Rather than a loss, we gained much from them. Every day, we all check on the Lake (Lake Erie) to see if it is still there. I am by Chesapeake Bay, and have managed to adapt. We fish, we hunt, tend toward humor rather than being sullen, and in general, mistrust government control of our destinies. in the 20's, my great grandfather began to ship fish out of Erie, to the tune of 40 - 50 tons a day. Eventually worked that into our own fisheries at the mouth of Walnut Creek, in Fairview, Pa., in 1927. Biggest year was just over 1,000,000 pounds. (mostly pound nets) Grew up hunting our hatchery land in Crossingville. Never had to look over our shoulders to see if anybody else was hunting nearby. All of our collective family memories are based in what those guys did. Times have changed, and those old days will never return, but we are so much richer for the memory, that to call it a loss is a great injustice. We all gained from their experiences. There was little in the way of grief at his funeral. It was a long life - well lived, and well loved. It was time for Izzy to fish other waters.

Sounds like he had a wonderful life. He will be missed, but not mourned.

All good things must come to an end. Sounds like he left an amazing legacy. That's a wonderful heritage you've got there Bender. You get to cherish it, while others envy it.

All good things pass eventually. My dad died several years ago at 92. He was the last WWII vet in my family. We have a pile of family photos of uncles, cousins, etc. in uniform. They saw a lot of action and at least 1 got a bronze star.

My dad died at 100+ last Christmas Day and I am certain you'll miss Izzy as I miss my dad. They came from a wonderful value-driven generation.

Thanks guys. We all have somebody like this in our families - that's why we're here! Hunting and fishing is a great tradition to pass down.
