Been loading 300 Roys for several friends over the years...probably the most potent of all big 30 cal mags and IMO way too much gun for the average deer or elk hunter. My buddies bought them out of mainly curiosity or in one case it got passed down after a death in the family.
I have never been a 30 cal mag fan but this cartridge will stand the test of time as one of the very best...especially for African plains game or Brown Bears.
Most of the loading I've done has been on the lighter side which mainly steps it back a notch into a 300 win mag perameter..which is a waste of components if that's where you wanted to be at the start.
Top end loadings are quite punishing on the recoil side..and I used to get black and blue occasionly at the range while testing loads or zeroing rifles.
I would say if you're going to hunt with your Roy first of all reload...most factory loadings are way to powerful for deer hunting and they will destroy alot of meat if you make a bad hit!!
Guess overall if you're a fan of high power and performance you will enjoy it..however not my cup of tea......FLEM

I don't find the .300 Roy overly excesive in the recoil department....you possibly have a light rifle or ill fitting stock.....Then again I grew up shooting 12ga slug guns so isn't much recoil wise that bothers me...

You're right..recoil in the hunting environment never has bothered me but sitting at a bench with a light rifle putting many rounds downrange can be a little dicey at times....

i have a MkV in this cartridge. it is such a nice and lovely rifle, a bit heavy though, but i hate the cartridge it is chambered for. and since it has a magnum bolt face, it cant be rebarreled to something sensible.
anyways, have fun with yours.

i shared a bear camp in alaska with a fellow shooting one. beautiful wood/blue weatherby version that had some dings since this fellow used his rifle exclusively, all over the world. he killed his bear with one shot too. while i've never owned one, i did had a 300 rum (almost identical to the 300 wea) for a short time. recoil from the bench was too much for me, so i sold it. seems i remember reading recently (and read same 30 years ago) that the 300 wea has the reputation as the number one cartridge for the man who hunts around the world.

If a doe turns around to look at you and you put the scope of your 300 wby on her neck and forget to take in account your gun is sighted in at 200yds and the doe is at 20yds, this will happen with a 180gr spire point. In the ham, through the backstraps and a big old hole out the neck.

Arguably the best all around caliber in existence and it really shines with premium bullets instead of traditional cup and core. I've taken about fifteen head of african game with it and either 180 Partitions or my favorite TTSXs. With the later, try 80.5gr of MRP or RL-22 Fed 215 primers and either Weatherby or RP nickel cases of all things and you can duplicate factory specs.
A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”

If it wasn't for the various 300 magnums, alot of casual shooters would never have learned what a flinch is. They are way past the recoil-tolerance threshold of most men who don't really shoot alot, and learn to control their reaction to recoil.

My .300WBY is a wood stocked Vanguard (Howa). It is not a light rifle and I usually shoot it in the fall, with a heavy jacket. Being fatter now, I have never thought that the recoil was that much more than a .30-06. One of my farmer friends has shot the same Pre-64 Mod 70 Win in .300WBY for 40+ yrs. It has probably taken all of his deer and a gazillion coyotes out to extreme+ distances. He can sit on his deck and shoot at a 18" limestone rock, 600yds across a small valley, for practice. Mahap the perfect one rifle cartridge for all North America, most of the rest of the world, including Africa thin skinned and plains game.

The Mayans had it right. If youre going to predict the future, its best to aim far beyond your life expectancy, lest you wind up red-faced in a bunker overstocked with Spam and ammo.

I have one and have had 3. I love the cartridge. My favorite load was 84-86 grains of H4831 and a 165 grain X bullet. I have tried 200 grain, 180, even a 250 grain Barnes. Still like that 165 X bullet. I haven't loaded anything new for it since the advent of the TSX and a host of new powders.
I mostly used it for long range coues deer so I stuck with the 165s. I found that they worked just fine on elk too. I NEVER recovered an X bullet from more than 10 bull elk. I recovered several 200 grain soft points, however.
With the advent of turret adjustable scopes, affordable LASER range finders and better VLD bullets, I would go that route now. A 185 Berger @ 3300 fps should be good long range medicine!
Oh, I did once blow a coues deer's head COMPLETELY off with an errant shot at 40 yds with a 165 grain, first generation, Ballistic tip! Yuk

croldfort; The 300 Wby is a fine long range cartridge and there's nothing wrong with someone using it as long as they can handle it. I just think alot of people can't handle them and end up flinching because of it having too much recoil for them. I had a young fellow watch me shoot my 340 several years ago and then attempt to shoot it. When he jerked the trigger, he almost let go of the rifle and he almost fell over backwards with the rifle pointing somewhere skyward...only thing was, I had left the chamber empty. He was fine with his 308, because he was conditioned to it.

I had an Accubrake installed on mine. I went from having my dick string knocked loose to having both ear drums blown out when I shot it. I find the recovery time on my dick string much quicker to the eardrums. YMMV.
