Has anyone sent away for old military records? If so can anyone offer advice with a site they had good luck with?

Thank you.

http://www.military.com/benefits/re...-records-of-military-personnel-or-others

I officiated a ceremony for a WWII vet earlier this year and his family used these folks to obtain records and decorations. It wasn't fast, but the medals actually came with his name engraved on the back of them.

Depending on service history, there are other options. Please tell us more.

A lot of records burned in a fire in St. Louis some years ago, it might not be possible to recover some of them. Hope you can get around that, somehow.

Badger Matt gave you the main location for the remaining records (wounded veterans also have a file at VA, but it is only accessable by the vet or next of kin.) Jonathan Gawne wrote a book a few years ago entitled, Finding Your Father's War - lots of good info in that book.
