There is no need to duplex powders. There is not a powder manufacturer that I am aware of that would recommed doing it.
I use both BP and Pyrodex and have not had any trouble with one type firing quicker or better than the other. I do use 4f in the pan on my flintlocks simply because it is a finer granulation than Pyrodex P but P will work in a pinch.
I believe Pyrodex P is recommended for calibers below 45. I use 40 grains P in my 40 caliber flintlock and can shoot one hole at 50 yards. I also use 35 grains P in my ROA 44 giving 2" groups for 5 shots at 25 yards.
In my neck of the woods BP is getting hard to find and when you do find it the price is as high as Pyrodex.
Why would you want to duplex powders?

In my opinion the pyrodex is junk. Black powder has a lower ignition temp. point and with hunting conditions not being ideal I go for the bp.
Beware the one-gun man.

i see absolutely no reason to use duplex.
i've been shooting black powder for over 20 years, and i have always gotten the best performance from black powder, pyrodex select is ok, and i buy it occasionally when BP is hard to get, (which is rare). and as for the pyro-turd-pellets, they are worthless, they wont ignite consistantly, and will surely ruin your hunt if you are foolish enough to buy into the hype that they are "better" than good old black powder.

I've tried Pyrodex several times. My flintlock will hangfire with straight Pyrodex unless I use a little 3fg in the pipe first. No more goofing around, though. From now on it's 3fg or nothing. Maybe if PA would legalize cap locks, but till then, my flinter gets straight BP.
7mm
