yep as i suspected . not a hook breech . if your going to have this bored to a larger cal . you need to talk seriously with Ed Rayl . becouse as far is i know , its going to mean a new breech plug and a new tang . it can be done so as to fit back to your stock perfectly but it wont be fun
same if you go to a larger barrel . your eather going to have to make a Tang EXSACTLY like the one you have . Or you inlet a new one

Looks like I'm shooting a .45!

Beautiful Rifle. I didn't see you mention who made it. Is it a known maker or a talented amateur?
They say everything happens for a reason. For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

A guy named Jim Lofland of Boothwyn, PA built the gun in 1976 as a tribute to the Bicentenial. I know this because it is on the gun. Jim was a gunmaker and based upon some internet searching, he had some patents for muzzleloading accessories, etc... but I still do not know much about him. I found a phone number for him from an old list of gunmakers but when I called a nice old guy answered the phone and said he had bought his house about 20 years ago and lost track of him shortly thereafter. I bought the gun from a a dealer who bought out an estate of an American expat in Switzerland. The former owner was the retired former chairman and son of the founder of Pepperidge Farms who had an extensive collection.

REALLY nice rifle there!!!! Just caught this thread and I absolutely love the gun. It might shoot a short conical well enough for deer hunting and such would make it a pretty deadly one at that. Our forefathers killed a whole bunch of whitetails with 45 cal and smaller round ball rifles so either way just go poke a hole in some deer lungs and fire up the BarBee. did I mention that I LOVE the wood and metalwork?? great grab.

ML gets nicer with each additional pic. If Sn:2 is the serial number, it would be interesting if it is the 2nd rifle in a series or the 2nd rifle Lofland made. Doubt it is the latter. Is the engraving in a milled out flat and left in the white?
