Since the old lady has her custom rig and I just finished my coyote rig it's time to start planning another one. I have some goals with this one and figured this is a great place to ask. I will start importing parts around christmas and hope to have it up and running by hunting season 2011.

I have factory rifles in .270 win and .25-06 Rem and while they both have been great rifles I would like to go with one custom rifle built how I want. Looking for a deer/antelope rifle that comes in at 8lbs scoped (slightly less is good but hoping for no more) After a couple months of searching this is what I came up with.

Surgeon RLR Action with rail and lug
McMillan Tikka 65 edge fill olive with black webbing
Krieger #4 finished at 25"
HS Precision detachable Mag
Cerakote matte black
Timeny trigger
Burris Signature Zee rings
Leupold 3.5-10x40 VXIII
Chambered in 6.5-06

Any suggestions or comments would be great before I start locating all the parts. If anybody has built something similar I would love to here comments on balance point and weight.

Thanks

Sounds like a good start... should be a nice rifle.

If I were building a rifle like that I would do a few things different.

With a 6.5 bore a #3 contour will have plenty of meat on there and cut down on weight some. I would also finish at 24" but that is splitting hairs, but I think those 2 things will give you a more balanced rifle.

The other thing that I used to like when building rifles is the detachable mag, but experience with them has gave me nothing but problems. Damn near everything that I have ever had go wrong with my custom builds in the field is related to detachable mags. So I would go a different route there as well.

Anyways that is my take on it others will chime in I'm sure.

An EDGE and 26" #4 ought to balance pretty awkward, I'd think.

If you have a .270 and a .25-06, why a 6.5-06 for my own humor?

Because you just do is a great answer....grin...

I would go #3 or even a #2 barrel and use PTG or similar aluminum floor plate. Use a Wyatts box so that you are not limited on seating with heavier bullets. I would loose the rail and just run Talley LWs and put dots in your scope if you want to get waaay out there. IMHO the weight will be close to your target goal and will handle alot better.

There a good barrel Bob.
Gunsmith has used them quite a bit now,all good so far.
You dont have to wait for the rest of your life to get one either.

Rem lefty
24.5 Hart #2 twisted 1 in 8
Mcmillan Edge
PTG bottom metal and firing pin assembly
Total weight right at 7 pounds and maybe an ounce or two
with 3.5-10 Leupold
6.5-06
Birdsong black T finish
It is becoming my favorite all around rig slinging 140 Bergers.

Near about perfect, cept for lunker shifter.

Wonder if it has an aluminum bedding block installed to counteract the temperature shift betwixt the steel receiver, aluminum rings and aluminum scope body, given a relative humidity of greater than 73%. Wait, what?

i've been thinking about a big shifter on one of my 223AI's...

I think the brass and steel in the scope counteract all of that... that and the glass... grins
