I've been reading some old gun articles and just read (actually re-read) one on the 400 Brown/ Whelen. Have any of you guys built one or used one? I have a few stripped Mauser actions laying around and thought that it would make a good big brother for my 9.3x62. old articles are a bad idea for rifle looney's to read!

thanks for the info! i tracked it down to early august 2005, but they don't have electronic copies available back to '05. anybody have a link? I also tracked down that the article is in the 2006 Gun Digest Annual.....if i can't find an electronic copy i'll order a used one off of Amazon. I've been thinking a bit more on it and I think that 370 Sako mag/ 9.3x66 sako brass would be good for a donor instead of trying to track down "basic" or neck up whelen.

You might do some net search for the .411 Hawk. I think that there is loaded ammo available from some small producer. It duplicates the .400/.450's. Good mojo there.

I have a friend who posts here who built a 400 Whelen on a Remington 700. (njs1230 is his handle here).

We have fired most weights and cast bullets from 180 pistol bullets to 400 grain 450/400 bullets.

The Brown gives you little, if any more real capacity and done correctly, almost any variation will be trouble-free so far as headspace.

The die makers also see to it that they are trouble free.
The 411 Hawk would be another good one, but I believe it uses the slightly longer, more expensive basic cases.

thanks for the info! the only thing I don't like about the Hawk is that it is proprietory.....I'm sure Zeglin does fine work, but I want to have choices as to who does my work.
