I dediced on an H&R break action 30-30 with a Weaver 2.5 fixed power scope for my 9 year old son. The setup is simplicity itself. The gun is short and light. There is no temptation to rip off multiple shots, no temptation to fool with the scope power ring. All he has to do is pull back the hammer and make his one shot count. He does not have to think about anything else. I have loaded up a bunch of Sierra 125grn bullets that are mild recoiling, but still plenty powerful for deer out to 125-150 yds. In the woods were we hunt, that will cover even the longest possible shot. I even let him help me load the bullets with close supervision.
Always remember that you are unique, just like everyone else.

If you can't get a youth rifle in 7-08, get an SPS and chop the barrel to 21" or so. You can get a youth stock in the classifieds for about $40 or so.
your flippant remarks which you so adeptly sling

Did not realize that Weatherby had quit offering that two stock option. Just saw one in 308 Win a few months ago at my local shop. Here is a Howa 1500 in 7mm-08 on Gunbroker with the two stocks: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=189979488

Nice rig. I think your budget may have been a little higher than mine will be....

U can still get the 700 in a 7/08 youth, they may not call it that but they still make it. Saw one at Shedhorn the other day.

Dober Not that it really matters to me, but I think that may have been old, new stock. I scrubbed Remington's website pretty hard, and the only 700 SPS that I can find with a 20" barrel and a relatively short OAL (LOP is not listed in the specs) is the .243 Win Buckmasters "Young Bucks".

when my step son was 8, i started him with the NEF in 243, i liked the idea, that he had just one shot at a time and when he was walking the action was open and i new it was safe for both of us. after 2 years, he moved up to a Model 7 in 243.

i'd not give my kids something that i wouldn't use... That's all. Don't buy the kids anything that you wouldn't field yourself! that was my only point... YMMV

It's even easier than you think. I just got a 700 youth in 243. The stock has multiple inserts, so the trigger pull is adjustable from, I think, 12.5-13.75" os something like that.
I'm a lefty, and not tall, so mine is set at 13". Perfect for me.

I know Grice just had it on there labor day flyer..

I have a New England Arms .223 for my kids to shoot with. For hunting they will start with a Marlin 30.30. I have really noticed that kids like to shoot a 30.30 lever gun more than say a .243 in a bolt gun. I had a Dad and a kid shooting next to me at the range, and the kid was scared to death of the .243 youth gun his old man was pushing him to shoot. The kid ended up shooting the better part of a box of my 30.30 ammo. I could be wrong but I bet most kids would choose a 30.30 in a lever gun over a .243, .260, 7-08 etc. after firing them.

My girls, if they show any interest at all, will start with a .22LR and move up to a single loaded .30-30. Myself, shoot a .30-06, but am really leaning toward hunting the .30-30 mostly anymore. I shoot both well, but the .30-30 is so much more portable and much easier for a kid to handle with not a lot of recoil.

I found a used Sportsman 78 in 30-06 for my oldest. Put a youth stock on it, load way down with 4198, kills deer just fine. If he wants anything else he's got to buy it himself, as that one will do it all for a lifetime if need be.
