It still seems unreal but today while cruising my favorite row of pawn shops here in the hood looking for bargains, I happened upon and purchased my most rare Ruger #1 so far. It is a pre-red pad, pre-64, pre-cross bolt safety, pre-barrel warning, LEFT HAND .30-06, used, without box, papers or rings. It is all original and is in a least 61 % condition though it has been reblued and the stock has been replaced once and the barrel twice. I purchased it for $2,000 cash, of course with about an hour of haggling, and the title to my new Jeep 4 x4. It came with a certificate of authenticity from the Franklin Mint that states that "these left hand #1's were produced at night on the 4th. of July in 1931 at the Ruger plant by drunk, rogue Ruger employees and there are only 5 known to have been produced. It is said Mr. Bill Ruger Senior had these employees arrested when he found them on his office couch the next morning in a pile with approximately 40 empty liquor bottles. So far, only 3 of these rare #1's have been located and Sturm, Ruger and Company has offered a serious financial reward to any gun dealer for locating them and returning them to the factory." I can't really believe I was so lucky to find a left hand #1 in such a rare caliber. If any Campfire members are willing to make me offers on it, I will consider them since I am currently riding the bus.

5 produced??!! I've got one just like that, but I was told it was a one off and paid $6,578 + tax for it! Course mine did have a Simmons 24-80x70 scope on it.

Don't worry Rifle, I only drink the best...MD 20 20. It's just like the .30-30 but with a lot more trouble the next day. I feel violated now that I didn't get a quality scope with mine.

I don't think you should shoot it.
There is no accounting for taste.
Experience is a great thing as long as one survives it.
Generally, there ain't a lot that separates the two however, Barely making it is a whole lot more satisfying than barely not making it.

DUDE! You got ripped! I just got mine for $1,500.00 cash plus my LH #1 in .38 S&W! The pawn shop owner said he had another one just like it for a bit less, but I haven't seen it. He said it had the ultra-rare Monkey Wood stock with detachable thumbhole.

Here's another one I'm getting. It really is a single shot because the cartridge lifter is missing. I think I have them talked into giving me $10 off shipping. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=189642779

If it has a red recoil pad and you replace it with something else I'll take it for my No.1 H .577 Mogambo. Mouse

You are SO lucky! PM me if you find another deal like that! I'm stunned by the custom blue job on that rifle! Looks just like pitting! I wonder how they managed that?

Man, do you realize what you got there? That was no .30-06! It was the first of a short run of the .30 Whelans we read about a while back -- damn, you got a bargain.

Lucky for you that I'm in Kali and he won't ship here, otherwise I'd be all over it.

Dang! Missed ANOTHER good deal AGAIN!! I gotta start hangin' out in a better class of pawn shops.
Hey Blowtorch, I've got a pre-64 Universal 4x scope, with 3/4" tube, that I pulled off of a gently used Glenfield .22 that I've been saving for a really classy rifle like yours, but I know that I'll just never find that kind of deal. Just for you, I'll part with that scope for $900.

Blowtorch, I've also got a really cool side-mount, see-through scope mount and ring set that could be made to fit your #1 just by drilling and tapping the left OR right side of the receiver. And the rings are for a 3/4" scope tube!!!
I'd part with mount and ring set for only 300 bucks.
Just think what a class rig that would be for your left-handed, ultra-rare #1.
