Hello all,
I'm new to the forum but not shooting. I am considering a Sako finnlight in 270 wsm or 308. I owned a 270wsm in a A blolt mountian ti few years back shot great but I was not impressed with the rile that much. I have handled the 308 finnlight but it seem pretty short for a 6"2 long armed me. The thing I am concerned with the most how does the WSM in the finnlight compare to the short action calibers such as 308 or 7-08. I am concerned about weight and length not recoil

Thanks all

Can't help you on the WSM in the Finnlite but I have one in a .260 Rem and another in a 25.06. Both are sweet to carry and have had no accuracy problems.

My Sako 85 SM Finnlight in 300 WSM weighs 7.2 lbs with its Swarovski 3-10x. It balances very well, shoots accurately with 5 loads in bullet weights from 150-180 gr. It will soon be wearing an Edge. But, the factory DuraTouch stock is quite nice too.

Since you asked for advice: My advice is BUY ONE !!!

Sorry,I drank the Sako-Aid.My opinion may be biased.

Swamp,

If your not shooting longer shots (past 300) I'd go get a Sako 85 in 338 Federal for under 800 bucks off gun broker and be extremely happy.

Wait already did that - nice short rifle that peforms like an 06 but has higher bullet weights.

If you load your own it's a great rifle, and you can even use cheapo 338 hornady bullets (lead not tsx) and get cheap great performance.

Thanks fellows for all the input really help when your dropping this kind of money. I know this is subjective but I'll ask the age old question for a do all rifle
270 wsm or 308. I might be hunting in the woods or over some open fields conditions vary. My main concern is the lenth of the tube on the wsm. I am open for comments negative or positive will not be offended.
Thanks all

I have a Model 85 Finnlight in 30-06 and it is very accurate. I also own a .270 WSM in a Win. M70. The accuracy in the latter is a sometime thing, it comes and goes. Ususally the accuracy in a Sako is more dependable so you might be alright if you get the .270 WSM.

I have about come to the opinion the WSM should be traded in on a regular .270 in a model having a 24" barrel. Lots of others seem happy with the .270 WSM but in my opinion it is nothing special.

I don't own a 270 WSM or a Finnlite so don't know if I should comment, but I have two friends who own that catridege. Both of them said that they wish they would have gotten the regular 270.

With that said and having some experience owning and shooting 308s, the 308 is the way I'd go. A 308 will do many things really well. Ammo will be less than the WSM, as will barrel life. If you look at the trajectory of a 165 grain Horn. BTSP loaded to 2750, you just won't see much gain from the WSM until you get way out there.

Since I haven't handled either rifle, I can't comment on balace or fit, but one of the posters above (bh444) said his was great.

Good luck with your choice and, by the way, welcome.

I've got a Sako 75 finnlight in 270wsm that weighs 6# 14 oz. without scope. I've got 2 Sako 85 finnlights, one is a 300wsm that weighs 6# 6.6 oz. & a 7-08 that weighs 6# 2 oz. The difference in weight being the shorter barrel on the 7-08. I'm 6'4" in height & the shorter barrel on the 7-08 doesn't bother me. Both have a LOP of 14". In my mind, I feel that the longer barrel makes it easier for a longer shot, but the 7-08 sure does handle good.

I prefer shorter barrels myself. I have 2 sako 85's with 22.5" barrels, and a 75 finnlight with a 20" barrel. I'm 6'2".

If the .308 barrel is too short for your liking, try the finnlight in .270 Win or .30-06. They have the 22.5" barrels and balance nicely.

I have the 75 finnlight and it is a nice handling and slick action for sure. I bought it used and it shot like crap, I learned that sako warranty does not go beyond the 1st purchaser.....so, buy a new one. I would have loved mine if it shot well and had an option for rings that were lighter then steel.

The 308 is always a win no matter what the format. I already own the 85 Finnlight 300 WSM & will buy the same in 308 next year.

Thanks for all the friendly input. I think I have decided to stay with a standard caliber for now get a WSM later.

What opinions between the 308 or the 7-08?

A deer will never know the difference. I bought the 7-08 because it has a flatter trajectory & I only use it on deer. You might consider the 308 if elk are in your plans.

I shoot an old Sako Mannlicher in 264 Win Mag With 61 gr H4841 pushing Hornady 140s. 20" barrel. Accurate and I love the balance. It sports an old Leupold 4x12 AO duplex.
The rifle cost $128 brand new.
