I'm determined to buy a Glock for some reason. Can't settle on which model -- 19, 23, or 30 -- for the combo of recreation/concealment/protection.

Newbie anxious for input. . .

There's a very "Glock specific" website you may want to visit----it's a whole 'nother world with those plastic guns.

Well, I would choose the black one...

Since it's a toss up, the G19 (9mm) will be about half the ammo cost.

Since Glocks are pretty utilitarian, it's a rare malady to be infatuated with them. However, I have a Model 27 .40S&W that is my packing gun in the urban jungle. It is small, light, and holds 10 rounds of pretty potent-for-its-size ammo. The failure rate on Glocks under heavy use is very low, despite the plastic. Nothing romantic about them, but they work.

I'm a huge fan of Glock pistols. My issued duty weapon is a G23 and I just purchased a G26 last week. Glocks may not be the prettiest, but they go bang everytime you squeeze the trigger. I've fired 1000's of rounds between my current G23 and a previous G19 and never once had a hiccup.

Out of your choices, I'd go with a G19; it's easy enough to conceal, yet still big enough to shoot comfortably, plus ammo is reasonably priced.

The site 222Rem is referring to is www.glocktalk.com. You'll find a ton of information on all things Glock.

Glocktalk is a great forum for Glock's. If you have a question about a Glock and can't find an answer there something is definately wrong. I have a Glock 22. Great gun. It fires, ejects the spent brass, and loads a new round every single time I pull the trigger. It has been 100% since new. Easy to tear down and clean. Great guns. I have a Kimber 45 that is not 100%. 98% but not 100%.

Glocktalk.com can be a good source of info, but it might be the last place I would go for Glock advice - kinda like calling Budweiser for their advice on beer.

I'd be more inclined to go to the 1911forum.com for advice Glocks, and Glocktalk.com for advice on 1911's - if there's anything bad to hear, you will.

There are a few truly objective folks at both forums, but they often are drowned out by all the genuflecting going on.

I like your analogy -- I've checked the glocktalk website, and it does have some great info. I'll check the 1911 site as well for some less biased input. . .

The 19 is a great choice for the above mentioned purposes. I love my 1911's but if I had to pull one handgun out of my safe to bet my life on, it would be my glock 21.

The 19 is cheep to feed, easy to conceal and offers a nice balance of power vs. controlability. Try going to an indoor range that allows rentals and see which one you like the best.

As a member of the 1911forum, I'd have to say that asking the single-stack boys about plastic guns mostly just starts a rhubarb. The honest ones will admit that Glock makes a good gun, but the Glockophiles @ Glocktalk seem to own a whole drawer full of 'em and can go into better detail in comparing each one. The 1911 guys are naturally more sophisticated however, so they will give more thorough answers.

I belong to both and visit them in the early am hours and the late pm hours. Lot of good info there. I love my 1911 but my plastic Glock goes bang every time. Ugly guns need love too.

I carried three different Glocks during my LEO career. 17, 22, 21. I had the 17 the longest and it digested thousands of rounds.

Glocks work, period.

If you are NOT a long time semi-auto shooter, stay away from the Glock. It takes a while to get used to the lack of manual safety. Either travel on condition 1 or take a lot of time to program yourself for a Glock. Definitely keep yer finger OFF the trigger until ready to fire with Glocks. Good advice for ANY gun but especially for a Glock. brandy new Glock users who find themselves in a genuine defense situation can find themselves with a real problem due to the naturel fear. Bad enuff with any semi but at least others usually have a manual safety to make it a conscious act not an A.D. otherwise they are reliable, reasonably accurate and maintenance minimum guns. Have a Mod 20. Powerful and I don't care if it gets banged on a rock on my way down the hills.

I will chime in my 2 cents worth, and advise that the Glock 19 is my favorite glock of all. The dimensions are just right for a pistol to tuck under a waistband and the magazine capacity is back up where it needs to be. 9mm practice ammo is plentiful and inexpensive, and this leads to increased trigger time.

I will also respectfully disagree with an earlier poster who advised to stay away from the Glock unless you had spent much time shooting semi auto's. In my experience, the glock is the simplest autoloader to teach to a novice shooter because there is less to remember. The two most important are to never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy, the second is to never put your finger inside the trigger guard until the decision has been made to fire. No squeeze safeties, levers, decockers, etc., to keep up with.

It has already been stated that the glock is not the gun to purchase if you want to sit by the fire and admire it, but if you plan to shoot it, and you have to have something that goes "BAM!" every time you pull the trigger, the Glock is just what the doctor ordered.

I just can't get past the staple gun trigger, and I shot one that had a trigger job done on it. Hate to see what the regular triggers were like!

But they will go bang every time! No doubt.

You really can't go wrong with any of them ( except I don't like the shorties) I put about 16,000 rounds through a G17 and replaced it with a G22 because the newer frame has the rail mount built in. I don't like the G23 as it is quite 'jumpy' in my hand. In the .40, the G22 is more fun to practice with. I was always a wonder nine fan, but there is no doubt, the .40 is a much better man-killer. I once saw a bighorn shot with a 180 Gold Dot out of a Glock 22. Perfect mushroom on the off-side hide. Who says one needs a 'sheep rifle.'

Um....uh...What am I missing? If you're not a long time shooter of semi-auto pistols, and a are a long time shooter of revolvers, you'll miss the manual safety on a revolver????????????????????????

What did I miss there?

If you ask me what my favorite handgun is I'll say 1911's and big bore wheel guns. If you ask what I would bet my life on for functioning and dependability I'll say Glock. They are ugly but they work every time. My daily carry gun is a G-33 just because it packs so snug and lite plus carries the potent .357 sig. I love my Kimbers and rugers and S&W's the best but the glocks, you can ding em, scratch em, etc. who cares because they will go bang where you point them every single time.
