This buck ran into the side of the cabin last night and knocked himself out. So I stepped on his neck until he stopped flopping.

I really like these new boots I got.

Boy there are alot of things running into the cabin lately. Heck I'm not going out to a stand, I'll just stay at the shack and wait for one to crash into it. laugh

It's really starting to be a problem.

I'm going to put a guard rail around the cabin in case a moose or elk comes around.

That's a deer that was hit by a car on Sunday unfortunately.

The boy (bangflop) and rooster jim both sent me pictures of it. Bangflop helped skin it out I guess.

Heavy horns huh? Wow.

It's ole Forky !!

He was off on a walkabout, after being pooped on by a flying bear & chased off the property by a swamp squid !!

I dont think so that one doesnt have the devil in his eyes...I'm thinking Forky is still planning on how to cause mayhem and destruction with his oversized blaze orange stompers.

I am sure he is one that is sabotaging the well project, caused the wreckage to the access road, flooded the swamp, tampered with the game cam, and drank all of the beer.

That dang deer is a menace to society and I for one cant wait for RWS to lay the smackdown on its candy azz.

Ok deer campers, my oldest boy 10 is a lever gun nut.

He has a Ruger ultralight in .257 Roberts with a leupold 2x7. This gun is a nice fun little rig but he really wants a lever gun.

What are your thoughts, we hunt everything from thick brush to open fields. Last year my then 8 year old took his first deer at 300 yards.

I really do not want a .30-30 or anything Winchester (just due to the safety issues)but this kid passed up 5 deer last year and went without filling a tag. This was due to cars, the rain, lighting etc. he really earned his stripes by showing responsibility to the shot.

Anyway I thought this would be a good place to discuss it.

And no I am not selling the Ruger, wink

Depends on a couple of things.

Firstly - calibre ?

Secondly - used vs. new ?

Thirdly - budget ?

The distances you are talking about are not traditional "lever" territory. 300 + yards is not for any of the .30-30, 44 mag, .45-70. That said, you mentioned that is already passing up shots, so if he is happy to limit himself to their confines to have his lever gun ................

That's why my first question of preferred calibre.

New or used also comes into the deal here. .308 has choices in Savage 99's, BLR's etc ! BLR's have "more modern options" like the 7mm-08, as well.

Maybe we need question 1 answered first & move on from there.

Just my .02.

Paul.

You would have to guess I might suggest a savage 99 or a winchester 88...

My 88 has a safety button like most shotguns have, mounted in the trigger guard.

I'm really not a BLR fan, I had one and sold it for safety reasons.

My 88 is a .308

They made them in .243, .284, .308, .358

mine is a post 64 with the basket weave/oak leaf cluster stock. I stripped a dry cracked yellowish finish from the stock, rubbed in a red stain and a few coats of stock finishing oil.

The hammerless action is kind of a lever opperated bolt action.

I guess I really like mine. I really like the savage 99's too but I don't have one.

Otherwise I'd maybe have a look at some of the late model m94's and marlin 336's with the cross bolt safety. (336 action feel tighter to me) People gripe about the safety (lever action purists) but I really like the thought of a safety that allows you to actually safely unload a tube feed lever rifle.

Caliber I am thinking something deer sized he doesnt need anything bigger so up to .308.

I really like that Model 88 you have as I am familiar with the Model 100.

The 99's are out as it is to big for him at this time.

I agree with the safety issue hence the non winchester, I am thinking the BLR is just ugly. LOL, I know it his rifle but dad has the $$$ and final say for a few more years at least.

I don't understand the non winchester... you mean non M94 (30-30)?

The 88's have a safety on them...

And a detachable mag. To unload you drop the clip and jack the lever (if you have one chambered).

Yeah half out of it with cold medicine sorry, had him come down and look at yours and he started bouncing around like one of their chinchilla.

"and it somes with a magazine" had to laugh so I have a model now just have to look at what to feed it. Thinking the .308 would be good in the future as the .284 is hard to find.

Thanks Dave I had forgotten about them,

Dave, this is why I didn't mention the Winchesters.

I love them, as I love my pre mil Savage 99 in .308.

Hate them shiny Brownings, too.

I'm a traditional kinda guy, but I'm aware that everybody has their own opinion.
