What is the most accurate "factory" bolt action-single shot OK- for under $800.00 ?

I'm studying a Savage 112 variant. The only prerequisite is a trigger that is adjustable to one pound or so. Stainless, heavy, laminated or synthetic preferred.

my most acurate rifle is my 22/250 rem 700 vs sf, i think its pushn the 800 dollar mark very close.

picked up a used ruger 22/250 vt thats not far behind the rem 700. both are planty acurate enough for me.

I have to go with evan on teh 22-250 VSSF. You can get them for around 725 or so on the online auction sites. I don't know about the savage trigger, if it will go down to 1 lb or not. What are your plans that you need a 1 lb trigger? The trigger on my VSSF is set at 2 lbs and it is on the light side. I am the only one who shoots it, so not a problem. For second place, I would call the Ruger 77VT your best bet. around 575 on the auction sites. Just traded one off and I definatly got my moneys worth out of it. Ron

I don't see how you could go wrong with the Savage and save some money at the same time. I have the 12FV and I see several Savages at the range. The trigger goes down to about 1.5 I believe. Mine's right at 2 and works fine for me. It shoots better than I can.

depending on witch savage you buy it will go to 1# or 1.5#'s.

The savages are great for the money and will most likly give the rems a run for the money in varmint calibers. Savage makes both laminated and syn. stocks.

If you are looking for a single shot they have a single shot bolt in the varmint also.

I would buy the savage and use the money you save for a better scope. What ever you pick you will do just fine in the 22-250 class.

It really is a crapshoot. Most Savages are quite accurate but then again so ar most Remington VS and VSSF rifles.

I do like the idea of buying the Savage and taking the additional money and putting it towards better glass.

Skipper,

I bought my Tikka Continental (22-250) for a little over $500 a couple of years ago, this was the pre-T3 line of rifles. I really like mine. Perhaps you may want to look at the T3's in varmint configuration. The trigger on my Tikka is factory set at an incredibly crisp 3# and is adjustable from 2# to 4# ... I don't know the range on the T3's trigger however.

Good Luck!

You are describing the Ruger Target Grey M77 Mark II Target in 22-250 . The trigger is okay as is or with a little home message it will go down to one pound if you wish. Take it out of the box and throw some loads together and enjoy. Don't forget the Leupold 6.5x20 to top it off. I have found the Ruger varminters to be the most consistantly accurate out of the box rifles ever made.

I'll vote for the Remington VLS, I purchased one in 223 last fall and couldn't be happier. I plan on keeping the stock when I rebarrel/blueprint the action, but that's a long way down the road.

I'd look for an older Sako. Mine's mint and was under your budget. No modifications and it shoots far better than the renbarrelled Remington that I love. Ward

The Remington VLS is about the best bang for the buck going, IMHO. I've never seen one that didn't shoot fantastic. THe stocks are very good for a factory unit (far better than any of the HS offerings IMO).

As for teh 1lb trigger, good luck with a factory rig. You're looking at a complete rebuild of a factory trigger, or an aftermarket unit to have one that is REALLY safe at that weight. Factory tolerances just won't allow that light a pull without some extensive polishing, tuning, and re-springing.

If you shop hard, you can get into a VLS with a good scope for your stated $800.

Geez Boys,
We really narrowed it down!
Ruger, Sako, Remington, Tikka and Savage!!!

I DO appreciate the input....

Pretty much have it narrowed down between the Remington and Savage.
I have a Leupold 6-20 that is new and been sitting in its box for 4 years. Think it's time to make it work for a living!!

I'll let you know how things turn out.

I can only comment on the Remington VLS. I had one in 22-250 but traded it in for a lighter LVSF. The VLS was extremely accurate with the right loads.

Before I even shot the gun, I floated the barrel and installed a jewell trigger. Since you already have a decent scope, The VLS with a really good trigger will make a heck of a rifle and should be in your price range.

My only complaint is, the barrel was kind of rough. It fouled after a couple dozen shots. My LVSF has an incredible barrel and cleans up easily.

My choice for a heavy varminter would be the remington VSSF (stainless barrel and synthetic stock). Have the trigger lightened up to two pounds. Later, (when you have more money) replace the trigger with a jewell. Then NEVER sell or trade the gun.

FWIW:

OUtdoor Life (or some such rag) did a side-by-side 22-250 varmnt rifle accuracy comparison and the Savage won, hands down and going away. They tested Rugers, Rems, Winnies, and Brownings.

The test used the same factory ammo (5 different types) and (IIRC) the Savage shot forst plcae with three loads and second place with the other 2. Also, the savage was REAL CLOSE (a few hundredths of an inch group size) to the rifles that "won" with the other loads.

I read the article in the Gym a year or so ago so I don't know where to send you for a review, but I was impressed at the methodology of the test was quite good.

The article also noted that the Savage was the LEAST expensive rifle in the test group, but shot the best. With the new accutrigger, the all the other rifles are fighting for second place.

All my best,

BMT

I've only got one 22-250 so I can't compare. It's a Ruger M77 VT that stacked 'em in the same hole with two different powders while I was breaking in the barrel. I don't think a custom barrel would shoot better than the one I've got, and I know I couldn't shoot well enough to prove the difference. The trigger is MUCH better than the standard 77 and very solid scope rings are included with the gun (I lap mine). The forend is rather wide which is only handy on the bench, but my Harris bipods still attach fine.
