I've packed a 1895 Marlin with good success. I'm looking at the new shorter guide guns - Question - what's the difference in accuracy, recoil, effective range and energy foot pounds out to 200 yards??? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif" alt="" />

The shorter, ported models are a bit slower velocity but I don't think you'll notice any kind of performance differences. What you will notice is the ringing in your ears from that porting. I would much rather let my shoulder absorb the recoil than my ear drums get blown out, and believe me, they will.

Like 2muchgun said, the guide gun will tend to be louder than a normal 22" barrel model although that seems to be subjective view. I know some guys that like them and others that curse the ports. The shorter barrels might tend to be slightly more accurate, but that's offset by a slight decrease in velocity. Neither one is anything to worry about within the effective range of the 45-70. The biggest difference is in the handling of the rifles. That extra 4" of barrel makes a big difference in feel to me.

Which way? Is the extra 4" better or worse, to you?

Partagas, I much prefer the extra length. The rifle just hangs on target better for an offhand shot. I also prefer the pistol grip models.

I've owned and shot a ported Guide Gun for a couple of years now. It's accurate, quick handling, and the noise isn't objectionable. billt
