Just a fraction of the qualifying distance for a true long range sniper:

176 yds
6mm BR
105 Amax - 2850 mv

Rifle - Ruger #1, Pac-Nor built, Kepplinger set trigger, 26" Varmint (1-V contour), 8 twist, 3 groove, proven 1/2 MOA consistently, and even shot a 3-shot .498" group at 330 yds. Proven on several deer, other coyotes, fox, bobcat, etc.

Never knew what hit him.

Stoney, nice job!

BTW, VA - I just about decapitated a deer w/a 70gr TNT/3500 mv from a Ruger #1 243, at a mere 47 yds (my buddy had to LRF it). Only a bit of hide held it on, that's it.

Perhaps another thread: The most unlucky deer....

This one also was done in by my trust 6mm BR above, only 45 paces.

It was also an ethical shot, Lights Out.

Your sure that was a dead deer? Little dental work and he may be just fine.

You got way over penetration on the one.

2much, after owning one, it's almost a 'must-have' for #1s.

I truly regret selling my RSI 243, very compact, and that #1 would have only been all the sweeter w/Kepplinger.

If Ruger ever makes a 250-3000 RSI #1, I will be first in line.

Whelen, that yote was facing me, never saw an exit??? Can you say Vaporization? Same load did that on a doe's spine at 200 yds, all bullet fragments were w/in 1-2" of impact site, yet another at 400 yds allowed complete pass through on double lung hit, a nicety of the Amax at longer ranges, it shines on long distance expansion where lower speeds may not always give great performance w/some bullets. On deer, one may not always be best served using a 'harder' more controlled expanding bullet. What the bullet runs into, impact speed, perhaps to a miniscule degree ROT, all factor in to bullet behavior.

As a side note, I caught a bobcat angling away at 168 yds, entry just in front of rear quarter, bullet shed most wt. INSIDE, only giving a nickel sized exit on off shoulder. Made a NICE full body mount w/minimal sewing by taxidermist. Another yote hit broadside at 60 yds, no exit, so Fur friendly depending on angle/distance. Yet a fox was not so fortunate, his smaller frame was nearly cut in half...about 100 yds. All w/105 Amax.

It's a wicked little bullet, and in 140/160 in 6.5/7mm, I am sure a very quick killer on deer sized game.

Randy, it was the only shot I had, it was facing me head on. Sitting on a deer stand, I turned around and kept noticing something did not look right, he was just standing there the whole time looking my way, probably spotted my movement and had frozen. I had an opening less than say a football between trees that I had to shoot. At nearly 200 yds, facing you there is not much to look at w/naked eye and he nearly escaped detection.

Assuming he saw me, his curiosity and not moving on did him in. My 4200 4-16x had better eyes than his as only my head was visible.

Don't feel bad for misjudging distance, hunting a new area one a.m., what appeared to be a grown WT doe, was just a 55lb nubby buck......bloodied my new 338/06, I hated it happened, but he did not go to waste!

I have two 6mm PPCs. One on a Browning 85 [heavy!] and the other on a push-feed Winchester 70 that was originally a 223 that wouldn`t feed to relibly. Just flat accurate and it [they] work greeat on cougars and the little Blacktail around here.
