Long story, this was a 1899A, with 26 inch round barrel that was made in 1903 in 30-30. When I got it,it was silver all over, with light pitting on the receiver, and 4 inchs cut off the end of the barrel. No sights at all, barrel looked like a sewer pipe. Stock had been broken at the wrist and repaired with glue and nails, and it was oil soaked to a nice black color, fore end was home made, out of I don't know what kind of wood. I purchased a new 26inch octagon barrel in 32 caliber, from Brownells, and new wood from gun stocks, inc. Left it with my gunsmith when I left Illinois in April 2007. Three and half years later, he had it finished. Bought a new Leupold 3X9 scope and when I get it mounted I'll see how it shoot. It will be a paper punching gun only as it is pretty heavy to carry hunting. Looks good. First time I've heard of a barrel being bought and fitted to an 1899. He have a hard time of it, or fairly easy?

I didn't ask him about installing the barrel. It should not been too bad, as I didn't want any sights put on the barrel, so he cut the threads so the a flat would be on the top and bottom of the barrel. The screw attachment for the fore end was done after he installed the barrel. The fore arm was made for a octagon barrel, and all he had to do was a little inside work to make it match up to the octagon barrel. He possibly chambered the barrel off the action and used a finish reamer after he install the barrel to set head space.
