Hard to sell tags when elk can be scarce. If I was a "nonresident" elk hunter, I would not come to Idaho. Spent quite some time learning a herd. Knew where they were everyday and night. Where they ate, where they bedded down, where they went when the hunters got into them. Was 150 or more in that herd, know a guy that counted 180. Last I heard it was under 40 maybe far less now, we go elsewhere.

On the same note. Wisconsin non-resident tags and likely resident tags sales may show a marked drop. Same reason(s).

I hunted Unit 36, as a non-resident, for years with my inlaws who live there. We killed some nice bulls and had a great time.
I still go back to visit in the summer but there's no point in buying an elk tag in 36 right now, as far as I can see. Maybe if you had the whole season to hunt you'd get into an elk or two, but the population is a fraction of what it was.
For me it's the wolves, not the economy.

Wolves are the perfect killing machine. There's reason why the wolves were killed out over a 100 years ago in the lower 48.

Dog, I've a brother in Stanley I hunt with but not this year. He usually just wants a yearling cow for the freezer but the cut back on cow tags has him sitting back.

yep . then you have areas along the canyon that have more tags then elk population . same with mule deer . buck only . but your darn lucky to see a fork horn . last year in 22 we counted in 3 days over 200 Doe's . saw 2 bucks . both were spikes .
we did see one herd of elk up above buck park . was 35 in the herd . just above them was a pack of wolves of which we counted 10 . but the F&G says there isnt a pack in that area yet .
myself even as a resident . if it were not for getting an LOP tag . i sure wouldnt be buying an elk tag

Used to hunt area 10 and 10A there was some good hunting. Won't waste my time going back with the wolves.

The whole purpose to bringing back the wolves was to end recreational hunting. The anti-hunting crowd was successful. Now the wild life managers are crying in their beer because of lost revenue. What the heck did they think was going to happen?

One of the Bradey's 10 points to gun control was to distroy hunting and they've made a good start and the greens are right onboard with them.

while that may be true . i cant see it happeningas it wont be long before things get hunted . laws or no laws It's already happening. On Oct 7, the gov. of Idaho says he will issue a prohibition for Idaho law enforcement and fish and game officers to investigate or cite wolf killings. If the feds want them protected, they'll have to provide their own officers.
