All: Just browsing the net lately and found 2 guns that seemed odd. Anyways, it brewed a question. Did Winchester produce 70s with the pre war tang and post transition (46-48) or Type III safety? Found 2 Super Grades lately that have this. See the 2 links. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=192977988http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=193154084

I'd guess retro-fitted
I have had five 46-48 rifles 61,000, a pair of 65,000, a 75,000, and a 92,000
the first four had the transition safety and the pre-war tang, the 92,000 had the transition safety and spade tang, which would make me believe they changed the tang before they ran out of the Type II safeties.

Or this one, a 1961 .264 WM with straight comb stock and steel butt plate.

Thanks, copied the link but forgot to paste it. I am assuming it is not the original stock.

That stock looks WAY too short for that 26 inch rod. Thats a bubba.

Thought the 264 win mags all had the red rubber recoil pad?
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Thought the 264 win mags all had the red rubber recoil pad? Some did, but they seem to be the exception rather than the rule.

The only 264s that came with recoil pads was the the fwts with 22 inch barrels.

When it comes to transition model m70's there is more variance than standard. This is even worse with the H&H's. The top gun listed is a little suspect. It may very well be original, but I would think that they would take more care on a SuperGrade.
The gun has a Transitional bolt without the clearance for the type III safety. If anything was changed on the gun it would be the typeIII safety in place of the typeII clam shell style, but it may very well have been made just as it sits.
The second one is a typical very late typeII. It has all of the typeIII changes except the tang.
