I am about to buy a Sako A7 in 270 Win and have some questions:
1. I can not find the weight of the rifles on the website. The specs I find do not include the weight. How much does a 270 Win actually weigh? I have looked around at Sako's and Beretta's site and can find caliber, length, etc, but no weights.
2. If someone wanted to upgrade later to another stock - like a McMillan or other - is that possible or advisable given the plastic trigger guard and current magazine system? Has someone done that? or in reality are you stuck with what you get?
3. The one I am looking at does not have the soft touch stock. How big of an improvement is the soft touch? I have not seen one.
Thanks

I have a 7mm-08- just weighed it with a leupold and sling-7.2lbs. My email from Mcmillan was that they did not foresee a replacement stock, but never give up hope. Would be curious how many pre-orders it would take. New version coming out is expected to have a different stock- A7-tecomate.

elkcrazy,
Finding weights is hard to do with these rifles...I know because I spent several days tracking them down. My .300 WSM comes in at 5 lbs. 14 ozs naked. While I won't swear to it, I'm pretty sure I read several posts that claim 6 lbs 2 ozs...which is about what I would expect given the difference in action lengths.
Additionally, the Tikka T3 comes in at about the same and they are almost identical rifles.
I've only had mine for a few weeks now, but I have to tell you that I'm VERY impressed so far. It shoots VERY well...almost constant .5-.75 groups with the 168 TTSXs I'm feeding it. The trigger was SO easy to adjust, and breaks every bit as clean as the custom Timneys I'm used to using.
I'll be the first to admit that asthetically it isn't something to write home about. If you view your rifles as a tool for a means to an end though, I really think the A7 is the best bang for the buck out there right now.
Best of luck with whatever you pursue.
Dave

Factory specs on the A7 270 Winchester are such:
It is built on the A7/Medium receiver w/ 1 in 10" barrel twist. Barrel length is 22-7/16 inches. Factory weight is 6-3/16 lbs.
The WSM built on the A7/Small receiver is heavier with a factory weight of 6-3/8 lbs due to the longer barrel.
I weighed my 30-06 w/ the mag box installed prior to mounting the scope and I recall it was lighter than factory weight. I wrote the weight down but I cannot find it at the moment, but I recall it was a bit lighter than spec. Same rifle using Talley LWs, LEU 2-7X scope and Alumina scope covers weighs 6-pounds 12-ounces w/ mag box installed.
I understand that the next generation will have a different stock, but I find the current stock near perfect for ergonomics. Shooting full house loads w/ heavy bullets, it is a pussycat for a sub 7-pound rifle w/ great handling characteristics.

For my buck the Sako A7 is the best production rifle on the market. I'm very impressed with mine.
I swapped out the plastic bolt shroud with a M85 SS and put on a different recoil pad.
Shoots very accurate, doesn't have all the crap problems a Kimber will have, and I like the ergonomics.

SU35,
I was thinking of swapping the shroud- can you tell us where you found one? I am considering buying another for a wildcat. Am curious what the new soft touch stock will be like. I swapped out the butt pad for a limbsaver worked pretty well. K

Once upon a time there was a website dedicated to the Sako A7. For whatever reason Sako makes no mention of this model on their own website...??? No longer can find that website...??? However, if this helps... Some time ago, when the site was up, I did a comparison, all things being equal between the Tikka T3 Lite and the Sako A7, if I recall correctly the A7 came in just a couple ounces heavier than the T3. Keep in mind that the A7 comes with Weaver style scope bases installed, while the T3 has no bases. http://www.tikka.fi/pdf/specs/Lite.pdfThe standard (.270 Win.) T3 weighs in at 6 3/16 lbs. FWIW.

Swapping out any stock that features the trigger guard, etc, as built in is going to be a problem. Would require additional purchase of bottom metal that would be found on a laminate/wood stock in same model. Seriously doubt aftermarket stock makers are ever going to get around to offering additional hardware kits for conversions.
Ran into this when considering changing up the paddle stock on my Ruger 77/22. Finding parts, who has the answers if fitting issues crop up, wasn't worth the trouble.

SS, the A7 triggerguard(bottom plastic) is a seperate piece from the stock, not molded on.
Spot, put down the pipe.... 25-06's aren't as good as 270's. I thought you knew better....(grin)

At least the factory stock works okay. It's light enough and I haven't noticed any POI shiftage from random shooting. The lug is bedded though.

Sambo have you seen the new A7 stock?? It's got a rubber overmold! And it ain't like those "tanks" houge puts on the likes of the Rugger Alaskan. It's the same size and shape as the syn stock on the A7.. Put it this way, It was enough to shove me over the "edge" pun intended. I'm going -06 in the A7 friday. I wouldn't even consider a MCedge for one.. That rubber gripped A7 makes it everything I've ever wanted in a rifle.. Extreeme accuracy, sweet stock, lightweight. and less than $900.. Could very well be I'll never own a Remmy again..
