Thinking I want to try a vanguard to get in the 257 wby game. What aftermarket stocks are available?
Don't need an ultra-lightweight. It looks like all the B&C stocks are weatherby-styled and I'm looking for something a little more classic (straight comb, no cheekpiece). I know McMillan does the sako classic, but I'd rather not spend that on this project. Whats out there?

You also have the laminate stocks from Boyd though I believe they are Weatherby type configuration.

Bell & Carlson... http://www.bellandcarlson.com/Their catalogue, PDF... http://www.bellandcarlson.com/bc_cat09%20(1).pdf The Medalist stock has an aluminum bedding block, and should be a drop in fit. Lots of different finishes available. I see, though, that for Vanguards these come in the "Weatherby" style...??? Actually, I think Weatherby uses these stocks on some of their lines, including the Vanguards...someone can check me on this.

The B&C is pretty much it for the cheaper synthetic.
Hogue makes some with a straight comb.
Might find a Laminate cheap.

Aren't the 5081 and 5082 Carbelite Classic stocks straight-combed?

Have you looked at the Bansner stocks? I've used a few, and like them a lot. Takes a little work to finish them up but manageable for most people.

Carbelite stocks are straight combed, but don't use the aluminum bedding block. Personally, I think the stability of aluminum outweighs style...but that's just me.
Occurs to me that B&C, because they manufacture stocks in volume for the major gunmakers, likely are able to keep costs down...which is to say, their competitive price may not necessarily be a true reflection of their relative quality.

I bought one of the older Butler Creek straight-comb molded stocks that was a Vanguard take-off for $15 online, just to try out a new to me rifle and preserve the nice wood stock that came with the rifle. That stock is ok short term, and if the gun is a keeper it gets a Micky Sako Classic later... just another way to get there. The takeoff stock is heavy, but it is pretty rigid and the ergos are good since I like a straight comb. The takeoffs are out there on fleabay and gunbroker all the time.
