About 7 years ago I purchased a Interarms Mark X cal .270 with a mauser action, from a friend of mine for $170, and I was informed that it was a Remington. I am not quite sure that this is correct since there is absolutely no markings or stamps with the remington logo. There is a few serial numbers that are stamped on the barrel, but nothing that really zeros in on the exact gun maker except for the Interarms Mark-X. From the little bit of research that I have done it seems that Interarms is just the action. Is this correct? Also I was thinking about getting the stock refinished, if I do so will this lower its value if I decided to sell it in the future. Lastly is it possible to change it from the top load style to a bottom loadind clip? I find the top loading rather annoying and troublesome. Any information that you may have on this rifle would be appreciated. I have to say that I love the gun and although I am a girl it is a bit much, but any deer I shoot at goes down, so I can't complain too much. Thanks all.

I've got one of those Interarms Mark-X rifles in 25-06.

Your rifle is a Zastava Mauser action. The Zastava action name changes based upon who is importing the action. Remington recently imported the Zastava action under the name of the Remington 798 and, I assume, this is what your friend is referring to when he says it's a Rem. Your action is the same as the Remington 798, but, by most accounts, Interarms did a better job at slicking the action up then Remington did.

I just sold a real nice one with a scope mounted in .270 for $200.00. It was very hard to sell. I don't think refinishing your stock will hurt anything.

They are about the heaviest sporting rifle I've ever handled. Everytime I tried to sell it they'd hand it back saying it was too heavy. They were just cheap deparment store guns for folks that couldn't afford a name brand.

I ran it here for $225.00 and got no bites. I spent 2 months trying to sell it before I lost my pants on it.

Since you've never seen an 8 year old buck except in my picture, I'm not suprised you can't find the ad.

gun,

You should have the Zastava markings on the receiver in addition to the Interarms Mark X markings. I'm bad on the years Interarms imported the Mark X, but I believe it's been well over a decade since they were banned in the US. It was later down the road that others, to include Remington, who imported the Zastava. There should be a 4-digit production code visible on the right side of the rear bridge between the two receiver sight mounting holes. It is simly month/year, as example 0575 is May 1975. This will give you an idea of vintage.

These do not hold a high collector value but are just decent commercial variations of the 98 Mauser. Some may be flawed with over polishing, but the overall mechanics of the Interarms Zastava was very good, with above par barrels and generally very good accuracy. You should feel completely free to do whatever suits you with the stock. For that matter, there are numerous options available for stock replacements should you wish to save the original. Most commercial 98 stocks are designed around the old Interarms Mark X.

As for the removable magazine conversion, that I have no experience. I seem to recall some sort of cheap conversion made for military Mausers some years back, but yours should have the desireable commercial bottom metal with the bow release. I'd not touch that at all as it is a sporting rifle and not a combat rifle. It may be a bit advanced based on your post, but there are gunsmithing options to your stock Mark X action that can make the insertion of cartridges from the top very slick. This involves the proper removal of metal at the top rear of the magazine box just below the bolt. This will not be a conversion to use stripper clips, but it will make feeding from the top super slick , especially if the rifle is scoped. Most any experienced smith could perform that task with little effort.

Good Luck with your rifle. Should you decide to sell, I'd suggest posting all the details here in the classified as you should be able to find someone to get your money back. If you parted the rifle, you may even make a fair profit.

Best:)

I've owned a Mark X in 7x57. They are what they are: a decent, utility grade rifle. I doubt that yours is anyway connected to Remington but that doesn't keep it from being a good rifle. It's value to you would probably be greater than what you could get in the marketplace so if you want to refinish the stock, no problem. I would think that the cost of re-working the bottem metal so it would take a clip or any extensive metal re-working would not be cost effective.
If recoil is a problem, there are several butt pads that are very effective.

I handle a Mark X in 25-06 today at a pawnshop, rather
heavy rifle, but not bad. I believe it had a custom barrel
on it. Price was $399, I figure it will be gone in a week.
Also saw a several Remington 798s and 799s at a gunshow
last weekend. Average price was about 450, I think I need
one in 222.

I also noticed that the bolt handle and the bolt race
way was stamped 1187.

I think there must be several different variations of these rifles as well because I have an Interarms Mark X rifle with the full length stock 20 inch barrel and the fit and finish is far above any rifle I have handled in my 50 years! The wood to metal fit is better than Remingtons, Weatherby,s and winchester rifles I have had.The only things I dont like about it are the weight (bout 8 pounds with iron sights and no ammo) and I cant mount a scope as low as I normally like them. I have never shot the rifle so I cant comment on how it shoots but she is a looker !
On the reciever of my rifle it is marked Alexandria Interarms Virginia. From what I can tell from reading others post it was made in 1973.
