fellas, I am gonna call Penny tomorrow and order up a barrel in a real "brush" gun caliber. My J.C.Higgins M50 mag well measures out to be 3.400" and am uncertain exactly what measurements to have PacNor throat the chamber...3.360" OAL? Doubtful I will use the TSX as the Kodiak 400's or the Swifts will more than likely be the choice of projectile or Woodleighs.

Do I need a crimp die for this round? I figure them to do a 21" bbl Super Match 14 twist. Have them set the bbl up on the action and then I can do some experimental rust bluing this coming spring.

appreciate the pointers

Send them a loaded cartridge you plan to use. The 458 has the same designed OAL as a 30-06 (3.34"). Crimp would not hurt as most loads with heavy bullets are compressed charges so bullets moving forward is only issue. Don't overlook cast bullets either. A 500 gr with a big flat metplat is an awesome killer at warm 45-70 velocites and far cheaper than Woodleighs or Swifts.

Jack,

Pretty hard to beat a Lee Factory Crimp die! Doesn't really matter if the cannelure is in the right place or not. These dies will crimp anywhere you want.
