I was aways taught that you shouldn't shoot something unless you can positively identify it. I think she should face some kind of penalty

If you go hunting with women expect these type of incidents. Pick your hunting partners wisely.

The father of the slain husband lives about 2 miles from me. The whole thing was a travesty. What REALLY smells here is that she hooked up with her husbands brother a short time after the "accident".

This woman was a trained markswoman. She competed in rifle competitions. Sounds pretty weak to me. What the h*** was she shooting at if she could not identify the target? Dead center on the husbands chest with a 300 mag.

I also hunted moose in Newfoundland shortly after the accident, in the same unit. My guide took me over to where the shooting occured. I fail to see how she mistook her husband for a bear.

Everyone has opinions, but I feel justice was not done.

It has a bad smell to it for sure. Couldn't prove it in court, there is a possibility that she thought she was shooting a bear, a remote possibility no doubt.

Don't see as much of it out here in the sparsely populated west, but growing up in Tenn and Va, I was always amazed at the number of folks taken to be things like gray squirrels, turkey, and deer. Given the number of family members involved, I suspect about half were well executed (no pun intended) murders. Tough to prove.

Accident or not, folks should do some time and no longer be saddled with firearms ownership.

Reminds me of the cases where someone has had 2 or 3 spouses simply disappear during their life.

This was an interesting case. Given the generally hostile attitude in Canada towards firearms owners and hunters, I expected the woman's conviction to be a slam-dunk. But it did not turn out that way.

Obviously, she had a good lawyer, but what really helped her case for an accidental shooting was testimony from one or more local guides who claimed, after performing a re-enactment of the shooting, that it was entirely possible that she believed that she was shooting at a bear. That was a key point. She believed that she was shooting at a bear, so at the moment she pulled the trigger, she was not uncertain about her target. It was a bear in her mind. That was what made it an accident rather than careless use of a firearm. I don't believe that murder or manslaughter charges were laid, and I don't know the legalities well enough to say why. Perhaps it is similar to an automobile crash in which the driver "at fault" had no control over the event and is therefore not charged with careless driving or whatever.

Totally frickin ridiculous. People have no buisness hunting if they can't even identify their target!

This one has had a stink to it from the start.

I just hope if the old lady choots me, she holds close and doesn't gut chute me.
