Im gonna get a rem 700 adl in 300win.I was originally going to get a pacnor barrel and get pacnor to lap and true the action and then fit the barrel to the action. The barrel will cost $205 and the work would be $250.Is the "prefit pac-nor barrel to desired caliber" when they cut the rifling and chamber?Because that costs $100.So if thats the case, the $205 price is just a contoured blank? And the price for one complete barrel is 305 dollars. Do most of you order a barrel from pacnor and have a smith install it or is it better to have pacnor do the work?

Some have had good luck with Pacnor doing their action and barrel work. I was not impressed with one they did for me, however. But I still like their barrels.

If you do have them do it, be sure to specify the shank length you want. They tend to leave them long.

The $205 is for a contoured and polished blank. The "prefit" barrels are threaded for your action and chambered in the cartridge of your choice. You still have to have a gunsmith fit it to the action and check headspace. I would buy the barrel blank, and have my gunsmith thread, chamber and fit the barrel. He will probably charge you $150-200 to face the front of the action, lap the lugs and chamber and fit the barrel. You will still be paying between $400 and $500 for the work. It just depends whether you want to pay it all to Pac-Nor or pay half to them and half to your smith. Buying a prefit barrel and then paying your smith to install it is probably the most expensive of the available options.

I am having a barrel made and installed, the action trued, and the stock bedded by these guys. They advertise in Precision Shooting:

Benchmark Barrels
(360) 652-2594

Ask for Ron, tell him Blaine referred you. His basic barreling job, including making the barrel and truing the action, is $400. They are fairly new but seem to know what they are doing. They have a very quick turn time right now.

Now, I don't know what kind of work they do. They have spoken of some of their barrels winning competitions, and I agree with their philosophy on buildi ng rifles. I'll have my 416 Rem, built on a CZ Safari Magnum action, in a couple weeks and I'll post how it turned out and how it shoots.

shank lengths always seem to be a problem with barrel makers with most making them too long. What I've started doing is ordering my barrels 2" longer than I intend to finish at, then I can take some off of the chamber end if the shank is too long....a LOT easier than trying to recontour the shank...been there done that. If you want a 24" barrel with a 1/2" shank,..order a 26" tube.
