Pull the forearm and look for a stamp on the front of the receiver. If it's an EG it should have EG stamped there.

Like this one from 1935:

I'm pretty sure that his serial number would have been very late 1933, but he never confirmed it was an EG. If it is, I think it's about a year earlier than any other EG we've seen.

My records agree with Rory (Calhoun)... i.e., the serial number indicates it is probably a late 1933 manufacture, but I doubt that the rifle is an EG since, as the Model 99 authority, Doug Murray, stated, Savage didn't start making the EG model until 1935.

By the same token, our own Model 99 authority, Rick99, stated,"Murray's pre-WWI numbers are off a little (Rick99). However, I doubt that Rick meant a "little" to be a two year error... a few months or so, yes... but two years? I don't think so.

There are other pre-WWII serial numbers in my records which indicate that Murray's serial numbers were a little off compared to the years Murray indicated those serial numbered rifles were made.

In this example (below), Murray states the serial number of the last Model 99 made in 1939 was #388,640, but Rick99 indicates that serial #395xxx was also made in 1939. I am confident that Rick99 would NOT make such a claim if he didn't have ABSOLUTE proof that the claim was correct.

Here's the example: 1939: 388640, 395xxx-It is a 1939 production-(Rick99) Of course, as Rick99 also states, "Never say 'never' with Savage" or words to that effect. smile

nothing against DonSavage99...I don't know the guy at all... but lets see some pictures and find out if its even numbers matching before we get into a big discussion about whether its the earliest documented EG or not... been a lot of times someone has come on here with a description like this and turns out to be heavily sanded, a restocked gun, or a take-down and the owner did not even realize it...

Don, Can you post some pictures and/or give a little better description? If you are comfortable taking the butt plate and forearm off and can you check to see if the same serial number is stamped on all? Could be an interesting piece and a great learning opportunity for all of us "savage nuts"

Need the serial number verified and whether it has an EG stamped on the fore-end. Then we can look into whether the receiver is not an EG but the matching wood is an EG style.
