You write terrific articles! I find myself turning first to your features, such as "Straight Talk" in Rifle magazine, because I know I'm going end up with a big smile, if not a good laugh, as I almost revel in your masterful combination of wit and just good ol' common sense! Your latest, "Dear John" in the Nov. Rifle mag, is just such an example, in which your reply to a reader starts off with... The problem with hunters and rifles is that everyone is an expert and their rifle is "best" just because it's theirs. Amen to that!!! In the same issue, you also penned, "Outfit Your Scope with a Rifle". Absolutely priceless!!! Keep it up, and don't ever let up on reminding us all that any good and sensible discussion of our sport and passion therein starts with our feet planted in the real world! Again, kudos!!!

"Outfit Your Scope With a Rifle" had me in stitches. Wonderful sarcasm!

Spomer is definitely one of the most "common sense" hunters and writers out there! I don't always agree with him but he is just a damn fine writer, hunter, and outdoorsman.

Guy sure seems to spend a lot of time in the field.
I really like his writing. I'd like to think he's a great smart azz in person.

Read it the other night and loved it. Great piece of humor. Even got me to look through my collection of old unmounted scopes wondering what gun I could get to give each scope a new home.

The "dear john" article was very good.

I hate him. His article on the .358 Ruger Hawkeye made me buy one!
This is a shooting forum, there is no place here for logic.

Good humor, and logic in a great article. Make me wonder how many decisions I have made on rifles, scopes, bullets, etc that are pure emotion, and not a lick of sound science.
I was raised on Jack O'Connor, and have .270's. Pure emotion, because I know there are better cartridges, but in my delusional younger years, pretending I was Jack was a great passtime.
Enjoy Spomer in the written word, and on the tube.

Whenever I pick up a magazine I look first to see if Spomer has an article in it. As far as I'm concerned, he's at the top of the game, and I'm surprised more people don't know about him. He knows how to use words and whatever he says, even if it's been said a hundred times, he finds a new way to say it. And it's not just for the sake of novelty -- he puts a little extra light on the topic. On top of that, he's a nice guy and as down to earth as they come.
I kind of hope he's not here, because if he is, what I've said is embarrassingly flattering. But it's all true.

I always sided with Spomer when he would have those debates on the Outdoor Channel with Larry Weishuhn.

Never saw Ron on TV, but have always enjoyed his writing.

Not to mention his writing about the new wildcat .30 Whelan.........You gotta love that.

I've always liked him. There's a lot of truth in the article about putting a rifle on your scope. And, Curly, I shoot a .270 because of jack O'Connor. There might be some better but there's a whole lot not as good too. The .270 is still right up there in the top.
