Friend of mine was at the Super Shoot many moons ago, Jim was shooting on the bench next to Ron. Don't remember the whole story (think Ron's gun took a dump) Ron needed one more shot to finish his group (low .1's). Jim hands Ron his BR rifle and the only round he had left, told Ron to hold in the center of his group. Ron did, slipped the last shot into the group...

I know he is retired from writing, but it would sure be nice if he would join us at the campfire every now and then. It sounds like he would find some fans among us.

I started reading OL as a teen and I would read and re-read Carmichaels articles. One of the ones that is still fresh in my mind is his article on the .280 Rem.

He wrote about being holed up in a storm in a hunting camp in Iran I believe, and stepping out one day and busting a crow with his custom .280 at a distance that he didn't specify, but that made quite an impression on his guides.

After reading that as a young teen, I figured I would have a .280 some day. Hasn't happened yet. Maybe someday.

My old gunsmith Nelson Berger sent me a article written by JC about the 22 CHeetah.
The two caps of the CH in CHeetah, stand for Carmichael Huntington.
JCs discription of what the round will do to a woodchuck written all those years ago.
Is spot on.
Good to see him still kicking around.

I don't know how old he is, but he certainly appeared to be in fine health Sunday afternoon.

He was polite, humble, and friendly to boot!

What I really liked about Jim Carmichael was that he wasn't just a gun geek, he was a polished writer and a great storyteller, as well.

My favorite article of his was a humorous narrative about his side job as a pigeon exterminator (sniping with an air rifle) in his home town.

I was disappointed when he claimed to have developed the .260 Rem. I have no doubt that he was instrumental in getting Remington to introduce it as a commercial cartridge, but the 51mm NATO case was necked down to take 6.5mm bullet by various wildcatters since the early 50's.

Other than that, I have really enjoyed his writing.

Earlier this year I was the lucky winner of Carmichael's personal copy of "Designing and Forming Custom Cartridges" by Ken Howell. He sent it with a nice letter addressed to me and my son and signed the book on the page devoted to the .22 Cheetah. Sure would like to meet him one day.

If I remember right, he had credentials as an engineer, too.

There has to be a way to invite him to the campfire. JB, or anyone, how could we extend the invitation?

JC articles in OL were my very favorite part of OL magazines back in the day. I've still got a good many of those old magazines put back. Based solely on his writings I became interested in the 280 Rem.

Can not speak for exact age, but I met Jim in 1963 while he was working on his Masters Degree. I was fortunate to have him restock my Ithica dbl.in this time period, which had been broken. Still have it.
Have visited & kept in touch over the years.
A very smart man, beyond the world of firearms.
Treasure the honor of meeting him.

Woodchuck,
You are pretty close on his age. He gets around very well and still shoots a lot.
