What does Howa do to the Vanguard action to accommodate the 300 Wby Mag cartridge length? I have an older Vanguard 338 Win Mag and have been thinking about rebarrelling to a full-length magnum chambering like 340 or 375 Wby, so I tried a factory 300 Wby round for size (180 gr accubond loading). I found that the magazine will hold it, but it won't feed due to interference of the bullet tip on the action feed ramp rear edge.

Is this because of the accubond bullet, or is the action different in length somehow; i.e., bolt stop ground to lengthen bolt stroke, or shorter feed ramp, or ??? I believe the overall action length of both chambering to be the same. Has anyone else already looked at this?

Tried again tonight, the 338 magazine box is too short by a few thou too. Can I talk anyone with a Vanguard 300 Wby into measuring the length of the magazine box?

i hi i have a .257wby in a vanguard and the inside length of the magbox 3.535 inches dont if it helps you but for all practical reasons the magbox should be the same from the .257 to the .300

Thanks! That is exactly what the 338 measures also. Got my hands on my buds 300 Bee Vanguard tonight, I am going to mess with it and make some measurements. I had to volunteer to clean it for him!

I'll post the dimensions when I get 'em.

Well, the Vanguard 300 Roy mag box is exactly 3.6 inches front to back. Not much breathing room for a full-length magnum case! Looks like the bolt stop is ground back a skosh more, too. All things considered though, I'd say marginal action length even in a factory 300 Bee. Best to use for mid-length magnums like 338 Win or 358 Norma and the like. It would work fine in a 375 Ruger build, too.

has the thought of seating the accubond deeper ever crossed your mind? 3.6 box should be plenty ..

I have a wby vanguard SUB-MOA model in 300wby. MY mag box will only let me fit 3.58" and function. I load with barnes bullets and with the wby free bore it works great. It didnt like accubonds at all never could get them to group. I load the 200gr TTSX at 3.57" and they do not bind at all and function smooth through cycling rounds.

Hi, my Vanguard that I built my 7mm Mashburn on was a 300 Wby. It like Danny1788's measures 3.58. The 340 Wby is factory loaded out to 3.650 OAL, I load my 375 Wby to about 3.60 but the 3.560 is possible in the 375. Randy
