What are you wanting to build on it?
It already has a great stock.

i do love the stock. i wish it shot as well as it feels. One scenario I was thinking of ...opening the bolt to a short mag and a heavier barrel. I wasn't sure if this was possible. Another was either 243 AI or 7 08 AI (in which case I would want a smith to handle the load development as well-I don't handload.) additionally I would want a synthetic stock and a new finish.

If you don't handload, why would you go AI?

If it were me, I'd rebed, recrown, and try some different loads. There are certainly no flies on the 7mm-08.

something about wanting what you can't have....i would plan to have someone do load development and then get ammo from them. this isn't about logic, i agree!

You want a new synthetic stock so we take it you got the wood stock. You don't handload so no I can't see AI. Why not just sell and buy a 243 Kimber Montana?

Of all my rifles, my favorite is 25 05 built with a rem mag contour barrel. i have really enjoyed the heavier weight up front. trying to capture some of that feel in a short action. truth be known I could be just as happy with a slightly heavier contour barrel in the 7 08...just making it interesting.

The 84M is scaled in diameter to short action standard cartridges, I don't even think there is enough meat there to chamber the .284. So, short mags need not apply. Not only that, the magazine box is 2.8 and I think all short mags are 3.0.

However, there was an 84 in 6/284 for sale on Gunbroker... An 84 in either 6.5/284 or 284 would not suck at all.

I've got a Kimber Montana .308 which shoots good with slightly reduced loads but sucks balls with near max stuff. I've done a lot of thinking in the last year about what to do with it. I've tried throwing different cartridges into the mag to see what feeds and so on.
My suggestion is to stick with the .308 family, .257 Roberts, or possibly .22-250. I think you probably could get an "x"-.284 to work but you'd probably need to fatten/lengthen the barrel shank which adds weight and kinda defeats the purpose of the super light Kimber action.
Very likely the 7mm-08 is the best of the bunch. I would seriously consider ordering a really good aftermarket barrel matching the factory contour, having a top notch gunsmith install it with a short enough throat your chosen bullet can just tap the rifling at 2.82" and expect to load to 2.80", than have the assembled barreled action cryo-ed. That action has none too much meat on it, if any action with residual machining stresses will flex and move POI with heat, that's likely the one.
.260 deserves consideration. Depends on what you plan to shoot with your rifle.
I'm not always inclined to do the most logical thing. I'm a .25 fan. I'm considering .257 Roberts, but also .25 Souper.

I am thinking of almost the same thing. I want to build a 300 whisper and use the kimber action for it. Much prefer it over the remington, IMO.

That would be about the silliest thing you could do with an excellent alpine CRF action, especially one in 223, since they are really hard to locate. Get an AR, or build it on a Savage. If you want to shoot subsonic loads, even a 308 will work now that Trail Boss is available.

Have a few ar's, not that into them. Also not a huge fan on Savage. But CZ's are another option.

284's on the 84 are a no-no.... roll up a 260 and be done..

Here is what I think you should do: sell the Kimber as is. Buy a Remington Model Seven XCR 243, since it has a heavier fluted barrel but still gets you a nice lightweight overall. Put it in a nicer synthetic stock when you get the chance. For what you are talking about I think you'll be happier.

A Montana wearing a 22" 1-8" 3-grooved contour dupe and chambered 22-250AI,do appeal.............
