Is there anything to choose between the two? Very good prices on the 60 at WalMart, and the 10-22 model I crave is in stock at my corner gun emporium, but, $ignificantly more $$.
It is the newer Deluxe model, with the plastic triger group housing.
Or, should I just look till I find an older one of either? Thanks.
What's the worst thing that can happen? O.K., what's the next worst thing?

Buy one of each. Have both, prefer the 1022.
If three or more people think you're a dimwit, chances are at least one of them is right.

If you like to tinker, go with the Ruger.

My 60 worked for YEARS.
10/22s are for tinker-ers, easy to get a $2,000 10/22 built up.

yep. i've kilt squirells with both.
also have a rem. model 597, and for out of the box accuracy it's hard to beat.
but, for the two, imho, one is made to shoot, and one is made to tinker with. both are fun.

Or, drop an $85 Green Mtn. barrel on it, tinker with the trigger/hammer a bit and have a pretty good rifle without all that extra moolah invested?

The Ruger 10/22 is best semi-auto available because it is so easy to replace all the parts with good ones. Bruce

I've used both for squirrels and found the stock 60 to be as overall accurate as the stock 10-22. With ammo they shoot well both are accurate enough for head shots on squirrels out to 60 yards using a rest (side of a tree, etc.) and a scope.
In stock condition both usually have heavy triggers that you can get used to. I can't do much with the 60's trigger but the 10-22s can be modified to a decent pull.
If I was sure I was going to leave the rifle stock I'd take the one I got the best deal on.

You should go to Rimfire Central. They show a fix for the model 60 trigger.

I have both and have had both at different times over the years. I can't seem to keep a 10/22 for some reason.....I am trying to keep this one. I don't find them amazingly accurate or reliable unless you spend some money on them. That being said, they are the most tinkered with .22's out there.
My first .22 was a model 60. The first week I had it back in 1990 I shot over 10,000 rounds through it. Back then you could buy a brick of .22's for $8.00.
I would guess that Model 60 probably digested over 50,000 rounds before I traded it off like a fool. I bought one recently and I doubt I will ever get rid of it....nothing fancy....just works every time and shoots little groups.

I'll go with Gus--I have a 10/22 and a 597. 597 is very accurate and scary easy to disassemble and also tinker with if you want to that route for a very good trigger. They had some issues with older magazines few years ago and a FEW bad barrels in the heavy bbl. guns that Rem has fixed--but overall a great gun with a full size stock. You can go to RimfireCentral and the Rem. forum, 597 subforum to learn more, as you can with the Ruger and Marlin as well.

When I was 14 I gave my Mom money saved from a summer job to buy me a 10/22. That .22 would never shoot a full magazine without jamming. I got rid of it and bought a Model 60. It doesn't jam, is squirrel accurate, and I think balances better for me. I also prefer the tube feed of the Model 60. In the 33 years since, I've been tempted to buy another 10/22. All I have to do is pull out that Model 60 to squash that thought.

They're both good, affordable .22s. I bought a 10/22 standard with a walnut stock in the summer of '78 and shot thousands of rounds thru it before selling it to my dad c. '83 for beer money while in college. Got a replacement at Wally Whirl in '88. Both are sub-1 inch shooters at 50 yards with anything I put in them.
Only thing that has never fed has been Aguila Colibris, gotta hand cycle those!
My suggestion is put a 1-in. scope on a Ruger or Marlin and you'll be able to shoot squirrels in the head out to 50 yards from now till doomsday.

Out of the box, the marlin will outshoot 9 out of 10 ruger 10-22's. This has been my experience. BSA.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

I like the Glenfield model with the squirrel on the stock. Have shot many of the same with it with a K4 Weaver on top.

Just looked at a new model 60 today at Bi-mart and it was $200.00. The same price as the 10-22. I remember buying them in the late 80's and early 90's for around $100.00!!!!!
