Been wanting a new Model 70 S.C in 25-06 for quite some time now. I have and old pushfeed one that is going down the road tomorrow.

They were supposed to make a run of this cal. last year but didn't. In 2010, they dropped the chambering from their lineup.

Was thinking of buying one in .270 or 30-06 and having it rebarreled in .25-06.

Wondering if I could get anything for the unfired factory bbl. if I make the switch?

Not a stupid idea. Figure you could probably get fifty bucks or so for the factory tube. If it trips your trigger, go for it!

Does spending a $1k - $1.2K (depending on barrel and smith) seem like a fair price TO YOU for a FN70 25-06?

If it seems like too much than its stoopid ... if not you may think it borders on genius smile

Thought hard about the .257 Wby Mag.

No doubt a better round in every way, but I had such good luck with my old 25-06, that I don't want to change.

Since I'll be shelling out for a Shilen or Pac Nor bbl., I want to get some good life out of it as well.

Fifty bucks sounds ok for the old tube.

MagMarc,

I am trying to get out of this life without owning a .270. wink

Got a 7-08, that's close enough.

If you do it, you might want to think about having it done in the AI version.

I thought about that too, just not really into fire forming brass.

Since those barrels fit model 70's and Ruger 77's, it should sell.

Come on over to the dark side, grasshopper. You know you want to... Once you drop a few critters with the .257, you'll never go back.

There are some great prices on 30-06 M70s on GB. Saw one today NIB for $568. This is one of the SC guns too.

Smart man, I've bought and resold several but have never shot one that I owned.

I bought a Steyr .270 last week at a good price and actually might hunt with it this year, but I won't like it grin

Not stupid at all. You'll have $1200 or so into it when done, but you'll have a rifle with a straightened action and good barrel if you do it right. I'm to the point now where I expect to have to rebarrel a factory rifle to get it to shoot right. If I'm hard over on having one shoot out of the box then I buy a savage, anything else I just plan on rebarreling to get it to shoot.

John Moses, if you want to save some bucks I will plumb that thing for ya free of charge. I build lots of rifles for guys from the old MDWFP website. I cannot charge a penney for building them because I do not want to hassle with a FFL.

John,

I sold a couple take-off barrels here. I think I got $60-$75 for them. They were well used too.
