Fun? Challenging? Long-range game-getter? Handloading nightmare?

Can be all the above.. laugh

It's a good cartridge....goes fast, shoots flat and hits hard.Just like all the other magnum capacity 7mm's.

I don't know for sure but seems it likes 26" tubes.

Some like it at warp speed with light bullets but I think it's forte is the ability to shoot heavy 7mm bullets very fast as well.

The 280 Remington is overbore.

The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

Like most other rounds. I think it will depend on the rifle.

26" to 28" tubes and it'll have the best opportunity to burn the power.

I tried a couple of these over the years but have dropped back to the regular old plain jane vanilla 7mmRemMag.

I have a Sako model 75 stainless in 7mm STW it has the 26in. barrel. It is a heavy long gun, but it shoots really well and it will sure enough bust a whitetail at long range. Factory ammo has become scarse in the last few years, it was plentiful when I bought the gun in 1999. I don't reload so this is becoming a problem, I do know some people that load for it though. They quit loading my most accurate load for it Speer Nitrex 145 grain Grand Slams. Now I am shooting Fed Premium 160 grain Acubonds, they shoot good too. Anything I have shot in this rifle shoots pretty good though, I think it is one of those guns that will just plain shoot.

It is an update of the 7mm-300 Weatherby.
They were shooting that one at Williamsport 1000 yd range maybe 50 years ago......
Heavy guns, longtubes, and dial it in.
I got the reamers and dies from Al Wardrup years ago, just haven't built it yet. He liked it though.

I guess there is not enough demand for it, most of the major ammo companies used to make at least one load for it. Now just a few load them. A few companies still load them but they are expensive.

You think ammo is scarce, try finding a new rifle chambered in 7mm STW on any store shelf.

The sales of the cartridges like the STW family (and rifles so chambered) dropped off when Remington introduced Ultramags and then plummeted when the WSM and SAUM cartridges came on the scene.

That's why I've stocked up on 'em.. Got four of the 7STW rifles.. All model 70s; 2 Super Grades and 2 Sporters..

Yeah, but IYAM those rounds aren't all that popular either.. At least, around here they aren't - not sure about the rest of the country..

Handloading nightmare?

I have owned three 7mmstw rifles, and all three were quite easy to load for.All were custom rifles built on 700 actions, and all three were shooting 1/2" to 3/4" groups,on my first trip to the range.

As far as factory loads go,I wouldn't own a 7mmstw if I didn't handload.

I like mine, its on a 700 w/ a SS fluted Rem 7mm RM barrel punched to 7STW. Shoots 1" w/ the first load I tried. About the same recoil as a 300wm IME.

Ammo around here in TX isn't that hard to find. Tho I don't know anyone who shoots factory ammo in one. I guess it's a regional deal. The STW is pretty popular around here.
