I read on a box of 60gr Hornady .224 bullets, that they and the 60 gr sp will not stabilize in a 1 in 14 twist barrel. I have loaded them for years in my Swift 1 in 14 twist barrels and have never had a problem. Anybody else out there that has had this problem?

They were talkin' Hornet/Deuce/223 velocity.

The 60gr Hornie SP you cite,is short...............

It wasn't on a box, it is written in Hornady's fifth edition manual on page 150."The 60gr VMax and Hollow Point bullets will not stabilize in a 1 in 14 and slower twist barrels." I have not tried the 60 gr Vmax, but have shot a bunch of the hp's. Has anyone had trouble with the hp at Swift velocities?

velocity is part of the "stabalize" equation along with twist.

I understand velocity makes the difference, but the statement is a blank statement. They will not stabilize in 1 in 14 or slower twists. That just isn't true, I just fired 8 of them yesterday in my buddies Swift and they shot fine. Why in the hell would they print that, without further explanation, just irks me.

Luke I have a 22-250 and I can tell you that I shoot 60 grain bullets out of that rifle and they shoot under a nickel size group at 200 yards. I have that new Hornady reloading manual and I too don't know why they made that statement on "twist" verses several calibers in the book.

They should have made a reference to a specific velocity and this twist. I know they work in a Swift, I have loaded for three different Ruger 77's and they all shot fine. You're results with the 22-250 are also good.

It seems to depend on the rifle, my swift with a VSSF barrel on it will not stabilize the 60 grain partitions. also remember the the plastic tipped bullets like the V-maxs and the nosler ballistic tips are much longer that the older lead tipped bullets of the same weight. length is the more important factor here I think. If you look at the info on barnes ttsx bullets you will see as the bullets get up to the higher wieghts in each caliber they start showing the min rate of twist required for each caliber. I see there is now a 250 grain accubond and that must be a long puppy. I thought the 225's were pretty long.
