I recently obtained a 39A, rear sight was not complete, but
I wedged a cedar shim underneath it, took a few shots into a dirt pile to reveal where I was hitting, got it sighted in and was hitting man size targets at 100yds off hand,I was very happy with accuracy and cycle-ability

I learned today that in the early 60's, Marlin changed the rear sight completely. Mine was made in 1960 and is the old style, the one I got to replace it was made in 1966 and doesn't fit. Back to the cedar shim until I find the right one, but she is a joy to shoot and will be a fantastic present to my 7 week old daughter in a few years.

Jon, great post! I recently aquired a 39A from 1979 for my boys to use. Their ages are 5 and 8. The 8 year old is shooting already and uses a S&W M&P15/22. That gun fits him perfectly with the 6 position stock. The 39A however, being a full sized gun has a LOP that is still too long for him. Maybe when he is ten.

As for your 39, you could always put in a rear sight blank from Midway and order a Lyman 66MC receiver sight. IMO, these old Marlin lever guns are the perfect place for the Lyman 66. Light and quick, and they look good too. Good luck!

When I have the option, I prefer aperture rear sights. I have them on my 39A and 39M. I just put a plug in the slot for the barrel mounted sight.
