what do you consider a suitable wolf cartridge?
is there any reason a .223 with suitable bullets shouldn't work ok?

A suitable wolf cartridge is whatever I have in my hand when I see one! When I'm calling wolves I will use a .25-06AI with 115gr Partitions. Monashee

Monashee;
Just a quick question on calling wolves with a thanks in advance.

Do you use a varmint call followed by howling and barking like we do with coyotes?

Thanks again and have a good weekend Monashee. Good luck with the rest of the whitetail season as well.

Regards,
Dwayne

Dwayne,as you know we have no wolf season in Region 8,even though there are lots of them here in the north OK.We have pulled them in with the Foxpro using both deer distress, and wolf howls.I really wish Foxpro would offer a calf moose distress call,I'm sure that would bring them right in!I find wolf tracks on all the local mulie winter ranges now,and I hear them from my porch 2 or 3 times each winter. When one howls every dog and coyote within earshot goes nuts.Hopefully we will have a season on them next year,we are the only Region in BC that doesn't!Cheers,Monashee

Yes, I am very much aware we didn't get the season that was asked for repeatedly. I keep on hearing rumors in the wind that we're due for one, but there must be some resistance for one for some reason.

A friend in Kelowna spotted a couple wolves this season, one in your part of the world and one somewhere in the Big White area.

Thanks for the calling info, in case we get a season or I wander over to the Kootenays sometime .

Good luck on the whitetail Monashee.

Regards,
Dwayne

The 223 works more, probably, than any other, and perhaps more than the rest combined, in Alaska. You can always load it up with the very best bullets if you're concerned about it being light. Many of the guys using it in this part of the world are shooting autos, either Minis or ARs. That said, I've caught bullets fired from 7mm-08 and 30-06 in wolves. They can be solid obstacles, especially when they have heavy stomachs.

My choice for a Wolf Round would be the 243 or 6mm Rem with a 85 to 87 gr bullet .

bea175,

How has that combo worked out for you on wolves?

I think this feller has the right idea. Always take enough gun!

I got one! While he was chasing the only 2 elk I have seen this season around. No pics of me included because I really don't need thousands of death threats filling up my inbox. I prefer to stay out of the picture. He was about 5 miles in and it was right at dusk.

Anyhow he is a male (130-150 pounds) but I do not think he is an alpha male because he was alone. 375 H&H at about 100 yards near Lolo Pass. Heck Ya!!! Doing my part to help the dwindling elk herd around here. It was a long hike out with that pelt in the blowing snow.

I have used 30/30 and 257 roberts both equally successful. I have never actually hunted wolves, just targets of opportunities. One I shot circled back on me and was stalking me. They are a pretty impressive predater when you realise you are the prey. I had to kill one with a 22 once, but he was caught in a snare set, so that was just an execution, not hunting.

Never shot a wolf, but it works outstanding on Small to Large Whitetail Deer. If i was going to hunt Wolfs this would be what i would take. The biggest Mule Deer I have killed was around 250 yards and i took it with the 6mm Remington and the Factory Cor-Lok 100 gr . The deer went maybe 20 yards and piled up. Killed in New Mexico on Fort Bliss Military Reservation not far from the Mescalero Apache Indian reservation. I have taken more than 50 deer with the 243, 6mm and 240 Wby. My present deer load in the 6mm Rem is the Hornady 87 gr BTHP and Win 760.

I have only hunted wolves a few times ... I used a 270 with 130 NP in 2005 and 264 with 140 NP in 2010...the shots were at 300-313 yards ...in 1989 while returning from harvesting a Grizzly I shot a medium gray at 150 yards on a river bank with my 375..

||||||||Nope I closed my eye.(he he) It was on Jim's line and I held the barrel about six inches behid his ear and put one into the mastoid process. It was alive(until I shot it) but the fight was out of it. Not very heroic, but Jim was glad for the pelt.

A buddy up in Alaska uses a .223 with 55 FMJ's. This is to minimize pelt damage. His yearly count runs around 25-30.

Folks I know in the Yukon like to shoot them with whatever they happen to be holdin at the time.

They also mentioned that a 243 or 25/06 is good for the task.
