I'm sitting here checking out a friend's SPS that he said wouldn't shoot for diddly. I started checking scope ring and base screws, all good. Then I moved to action screws. Action screws were less than 5 in.lbs. BUT, my question is, is the SPS a free-floated design or a pressure point? He's shooting a .300 RUM, my actual wondering is if he's flinching or not. Aside from that, should the SPS stock be a free-floater as shipped from the factory?

I have 4 right out of the box that are sub moa shooters. They make the expensive rifles nervous.

Nope...not free floated from the factory, theyve got the "speed bumps" or some such up front. Buzz them out of there and it'll settle down for you...

Tighten them up and see if it shoots before removing the pressure points.

Put them both to 35 inch lbs,5 inch lbs is a joke. I agree don't remove pressure pads until it is tried again after tightening action screws.

My SPS Varmint in 204 has never made me real proud, always about 1" to 1 1/4", though I will confess that I haven't worked with it very much on loads or the way it fits in the stock. Tightening the screws or free floating may help.
But my 204 Ruger on a CZ 527 Varmint will put all shots inside the circle made by the SPS, so I don't really have much incentive to mess with it much.

My 700 ADL in 204 wouldn't shoot for dick either. The only bullet it likes is the Berger 35gr, with Benchmark powder. It went from 1.5-2" groups to .5"...

Thanks guys. I was sure the bumps up front were pressure points. I didn't have a torque screwdriver on hand, but I pulled them down to what I thought was around 30-40 in. lbs. I haven't heard a report back from him yet if it shoots now, but they were the loosest action screws I've ever felt. The problem he was having was he "hit the box twice at 70 yds, then couldn't hit it again" I don't know how large the box is or why he's shooting it at 70 yds, but I'm sure it will shoot properly now, unless he's flinching...

At least 10 different things. Loose scope base screws, loose rings, cheap or bad scope, the shooter, the ammo, cooling time between shots, .....etc.

Point? Plastic stocks can be accurate, they still suck.

Ok my other question and this is probably the problem but I don't know much about it. The barrel sets over to one side of the forearm than the other with the recoil lug being crooked and after 2 or 3 shots the chamber gets to hot to touch now this being said about it can this cause erradict groups because of uneven pressures?

Yes it can. Tap the recoil lug straight.

I have a SPS in .270 Win. that is a pretty consistent 1-1 1/4 inch rifle with several different factory and handloads. My dilemma now is about the Remington safety issue - do I have a new trigger/safety installed or trade it off for a new rifle? What are some of you other Remington owners doing?

There is no Remington safety issue.
