now that i've buttoned up my last 2 builds (7 rem mag on a rem 700, 8x57 on a czech mauser), i got the itch for a new build. got a killer deal on a 1980-vintage rem 700 adl in 243 win. gun is in fantastic shape, and i'm not a fan of the 243, so i have a suitable donor for a project.
what to build...?
will a 284 case fit the 308 bolt face? if so, how well does a 25-284 fit in a remington 700 short action?
Hunting is not a matter of life or death. It is much more important than that.

I did a 25-284 on a Short ADL Setup but was not pleased with the way it fed. If I put three in the mag and closed the bolt over all three, it would not feed the top round. If I put two down and one in the chamber, it was no problem. I really didn't put much effort into it and sent it down the road. I did like how it performed though...
Also did a couple of .250AIs. They fed fine, and the cartridge performs VERY well for such a small case. Wouldn't mind having another one. The .260 Rem is also another I like...

Provided that the reamer is set up for a relatively short throat, a 2.82" M700 magazine box is fine for a 25-284. I swapped in a SAUM follower on mine and now it feeds fine. 3,350fps with 100gr E-tips and have no complaints. It makes it tough for me to grab anything else when I head out after whitetails.

You're kinda making me wish I had put a little effort into solving the feeding problem...

Hindsight is 20/20, but I've let go of my fair share of rifles as well....
I just like how it allows for a relatively compact rifle but still offers point & shoot capability out to 350 yards or so. When the rut is on, the bucks around here don't give you long to make your shot. It doesn't kick either, which I like.

I have a .25-284 built of a 700 s/a, as well. Mine has an old machined .308 follower and feeds fine. It's a dandy little rifle.
Thoroughly enjoying Alaska since 2001.

You might consider a 257R AI - either version - although I prefer the RCBS 40 degree shoulder. No feeding mods required and max case capacity short of the 25-284.

A 700 in 358Winchester with a 21" bbl in a LW stock with a VXII 2x7 would be perfect for much of what the majority of us hunt. 200s for deer. 250s for bigger critters.
I have the exact same set-up in the works.

25/284 and other wildcats based on that case work great on a short model 700 action. 25/284 would be a great choice. Significant power and cool factor upgrade from 243 with still near zero recoil.

My wife loves the 25-284 that she is hunting with this year. It feeds great using HS DBM. One little quirk she discovered last week when we were hunting in TX....some dumbass loaded her bullets a little long. As in leaving the bullet in the lands casefull of powder dumped in the action long. I wish hers was not a tight necked chambering. I hate turnimg brass for a hunting rifle.

I know what it is like to have the "build" bug. The 243 is a dandy little performer with an 85TSX. Personally, I'd put it in a Ti stock and shoot it. If the bluing is worn out then have it coated, maybe even cut the barrel back to 20-21."

I'd punch it AI and call it good I'd restock it and call it good.....not much a 100 TSX out of the 243 won't do that the others mentioned will....other than being cool that is..:-)
