Anyone have any experience with 300 win mag or 300wsm in the browning blr. Accuracy, reliability in extreme cold?

No experience with the blr in those cartridges, but my 243 spends most of the winter in the feed truck for drive by shootings on coyotes etc, and has not failed even after sitting all night at 40 below.

If you are that set on getting a 300 mag in a BLR then look at the short action in 300 WSM. The long action 300 WM is really big and clumsy!

Blr's are great hunting rifles; accurate, reliable, safe, etc. My .358 is moa with favored loads. I agree with rahtreelimbs: the long action models are a totally different gun.

The butt end of a Blr is smaller than most bolt rifles, so you will probably want a better pad on a magnum number.

I just finished removing all lubricant from the bolt/ firing pin area of my .358, as preperation for an upcoming January elk hunt. This was after a poster on another site mentioned that his Blr would not fire in extreme cold due to oil around the firing pin. The action is smooth enough to not require any help anyway.

A friend bought a used BLR in .300 Win Mag about seven years ago. He bought it to take on his first elk hunt. He was having trouble mounting the scope and asked for help. We mounted a Nikon 2-7x and bore-sighted it. He doesn't reload, so I suggested that he buy five boxes of Winchester 180 grain Partition Gold loads with the same lot number. He brought the rifle back and we got it shooting about 2 1/2 inches high at 100 yards with about 7 or 8 shots.

I shot a couple of three-shot groups, allowing the barrel to cool down between groups. The first group was a little under 2 inches and the second was more like 1 1/2 inches. The trigger had a lot of creep and was at least 6-7 lbs. so we might have done better if he had someone who knew what they were doing work on it.

He has hunted deer with it every year since and elk twice. He told me that he checks the zero every year before his first hunt and that he is just about through his second box of ammo. It's not my cup of tea, but he wouldn't switch--he loves it. He has several bolt action rifles chambered for other center-fire cartridges, but apparently only hunts big game with the BLR now.
