I recently picked up a 1899 250/3000. I have a cartridge feeding problem , I first thought the magazine needed to be tightend but on observation find that as the bolt is going forward the firing pin slightly extends , catching the upper rim of the cartridge causing a jam. There is some play with the firing pin , I figure gun needs a new firing pin spring. Anybody have any sugestions?

You might need a new firing pin. Have you fired the gun, perhaps by loading it as a single shot? Look on-line at Numrich for parts. (They just might have them...)

And, near the back of the bolt there is the small "hammer retracter spring." That might be missing or broken, or just out of place. Shoot sharp, Mike

303 Mike: I think you solved this problem. On examination of the hammer , there is play in it. Now to figure out how to repair it.This is not a bad looking gun , no extra holes , good shinny bore although Bubba had his hands on it , stock has been sanded many years ago , metal is proud of the wood somewhat. Has nice figure and a perch belly. It drilled for a buttstock swivel stud and the machine screw is missing from the snap lock , must have had the front swivel stud in its place. Built in 1916 brought it as a shooter. Been trying to find the snap lock screw to no avail.

On my 1899 250-3000 the actual pin portion is screwed on to the end. On mine there is a small drift pin the keeps it from unscrewing and moving forward. You may want to remove the firing pin from the bolt and see if this is causing your looseness and protruding firing pin

FloridaGirl: This sounds reasonable , Is removing the firing pin a difficult job? I guess I'm going to have to take the bolt apart to fix the problem but I'm fearful of screwing up the works. Most of the old time gun smiths here in N.J. are long gone.

303 Mike: Thats the problem , the hammer retractor spring. I got a feeling Bubba never put it back when he fooled with this gun. I can move the hammer back and forwrd with ease. Now to locate the part. Thanks everyone.

The issue with the part is getting it by itself. I have enough bolts in the bins without springs that I will only sell complete bolts. People don't tend to want firing pins or bodies. Most people want the spring, extractors or screw. So for me now when I have them it is the complete bolt or nothing. Might as well spread around the unsaleable pieces wink

River, That little spring shouldn't be too hard to make if you can't find a "real" one. Keep us posted. Shoot sharp, Mike

River, One other comment, without that hammer retracter spring, don't dry-fire that 99. Damage could result. Shoot sharp, Mike

I've located a hammer retractor spring at Numrich arms. I ordered it today. Ive taken the gun apart , removed the hammer.I was right Bubba had either lost it or forgot to replace it. Just awaiting the part arrival , I would assume it would be a simple job of replacing it.

I've never heard of more than one size, so let's hope you get the right spring. It should simply fit right in. Shoot sharp, Mike
