I have had mine done by Hendrik Devel of HGI Taxidermy in Barberton, RSA. He's GREAT! Here's my example of his work. [Linked Image]

I did my safaris in Zimbabwe and had my stuff done in Africa. After all was said and done, I saved just a bit over 30% and that included air fare FOB Atlanta where I picked the stuff up. For example my buffalo mount in 06 cost 650 bucks in RSA and it was 1250 here. The full size Bushbuck mount was 1250 there and over three grand here. You get the picture. PLUS, PLUS in Africa they don't have to deal with all the EPA BS we have here so they use real good "nuk chemicals" practically guaranteeing your mounts will never get dermestid infestations. Africa for me.

A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”

I'll bet that the average African taxidermist has considerably more African mannikins than the average taxidermist from elsewhere in the world.

Yeah, Steve, it could happen if all goes perfectly. However, from experience, the likelihood of a first timer gaining all the possible benefits with no hitches is lower in Africa. I guess it is worth the guidance for a PH to steer business to someone he trusts (and is in business with), but having given benefit of the doubt three times now I stand by my advice to opt for America. My opinion is valid, as is jorge1's our your own. Stick with a taxidermist who has done what you wanted before, be he African or otherwise.

A combination of both is actually a good idea and will save you some money.

Some things are better done in Africa, some are better done here. I recommend:

In Africa:

Rugs (zebra)
tanning backskins
Euro mounts
tanning elephant, giraffe, hippo or croc hides

In USA:

Shoulder and life sized mounts

This will save you some money on tanning and shipping. While there are some great taxidermists in Africa, I still want my actual mounts done here, where I'm a little more involved in the process.
