My father gave me a Savage Model 99 .300 about a year ago, the serial # is 668,0XX. From my research, I think it is a EG. Can anybody give me any info or let me know if I am right about it being a model EG. It shoots great and I absolutely love it. Any other info that anybody has would be greatly appreciated. Attached are some pictures.

By the way, sorry I forgot to introduce myself. I am Drew from Bristol, TN. I am new to the forums. I have heard great things about this site from multiple people and posts that I have seen around the net.

Drew
Let me be the first to welcome you to the CF. I'm not an expert on the 99 as some here are, but it looks like a very nice EG to me. The 300 Savage is one of the more common calibers, but is a very good caliber none the less. I think it was the parent cartridge of the .308 Win. I would hunt with your 99 with pride.

Welcome to the fire drew1472. Yes its an EG made in the early 50's. Their is a letter inside an oval located on the front of the lever boss. Might need a magnifier to read it. Provide it and we can tell you the year of manf. Lever boss is what holds the lever on. GW

Yep, it's an EG. Sling is not factory original, but it makes it a whole lot easier to carry around. Looks great, and it's a fantastic hunting rifle.
Welcome to the fire!

Drew,,,My dad gave me one that looks just like yours when I was 13 yrs old (Iam now 71)A more dependable rifle was never made. I took more than my share of bucks over the years with it. I gave it to my Grandson when he was 12 he is now 24 with the stipulation that he never sell it and pass on to his sons or grandson. He has taken several deer and one Elk with it. Great gun. Good shooting,,,,Gerald

It's almost surely a 1952 rifle, though that serial number range occasionally pops up a 1953 LBC code.

Welcome to the campfire! EG's aren't at the high end of collector interest since they are the most common Savage 99 found, but as a hunting rifle they claim more than their share of game. EG's were made from 1935 through 1959, with the first 3 years being uncheckered, and after that they didn't really change. Can't improve on perfection. grin

Welcome to the campfire Drew. I am also from Bristol, Tn. Look on the "My Stuff" heading at the top. If you see a flashing envelope, click on it. I'll send phone number. John

Calhoun's information as always is extremely accurate on the mfg date. Your boss code also checks to the year 1952. GW

So what is the rarity of each model of the Savage Model 99? Just curious.

Nobody has firm numbers of the production runs of each model, so that's not one that can be answered with certainty.
