I just got a new Model 70 Extreme Weather in 300WSM, but don't have any immediate plans of hunting anything needing that much oomph.

First loads I shot were with 20 grains of Trail Boss. That should throw the 150 grain Sierra Boattails at a whopping 1600 fps, or thereabouts. Next I'm planning to get a can of H4895 and load some up with around 50 grains of it. This should give me something around 2800-2900 fps, a nice load for hogs and whitetails.

Anyone here ever load something similar?

I never have, but 49 or 50 gr's H4895 and a 150 grainer should put you in 308 Win country which is a good place to be for mild recoil.

That's my thinking. I'm a real wuss when it comes to recoil, but I wanted the extra capability in case I take the plunge to go west or north after elk or moose.

Old Forester: Check the charge because this is from memory...but IIRC 59 RL15 and 165 Sierra gives 2950 and great accuracy.

This feels like a 30/06,which is not exactly gentle, but it is less than full-house WSM loads and velocity, recoils a bit lighter.

Haven't tried it yet, but I am planning on working up loads for 165 Nosler Ballistic tips in front of IMR4350 (59-61 grains). IMR4350 has worked well with 180 grain bullets in my .300 WSM - I am hoping it does the same with 165 Nos BTs.

According to Lyman 49 data, 59 g of IMR 4350 will produce about 2680 fps using 165 Nos BTs - i.e., .308 velocities.

I would start with the start loads and the slowest (FPS) powders listed. Just because they are the slowest listed doesn't mean they are inaccurate or ineffective.

Keep your powder dry and stay frosty my friends.

......Congrats on your new toy........Imo, save the Trail Boss for handgun loads. My advice is, take any powder of your choice that is listed for the 300 WSM and begin at the starting charge levels, which will put you into 308 territory. 308 velocities is all you`ll need for hogs and whitetail. Aside from the shorter action, that is one of the beauties of the 300 WSM. It can loaded down to suit or loaded up to suit as well.

And later when you feel more sponky and desire top velocities, keep your eye out for Hodgdon`s new Superformance powder coming out sometime after Jan 1st. Might be a natural top velocity getter for the 300 WSM with hopefully some accuracy too. Hodgdon now shows a 150 gr @ 3410 fps and 3405 fps using a 155 gr, both from a 24" barrel. Those Hodgdon #s, are biting right at the heels of the 300 Wby if fired from a 24" tube, rather than from the 300 Bee`s normal 26" barrel.

Along with your H4895, there`s Varget too, which has worked well for me using somewhat reduce loadings.

My kimber loves 61.4 gr of I4350 with a 150 nosler ballistic tips, shoots them at a little over 2700 fps. Mild load and 1" groups. Win brass and win mag primer.

I just picked H4895 because that is the powder Hodgdon recommends for "Youth Loads". Sounds like I'm not too far off base. Thanks for all of the replies.

i have 2 M-70 30 wizzums on hand to present to my grandsons when the time is right for them to start shooting centerfires

I'll load enough H4895 to push 150s to 26-2700 for their deer loads......

Try Sr 4759 or IMR 4198...
