I have been looking for a commercial bore guide and gave up. I took an old 220 Swift case and drilled out the flash hole and Voila! a bore guide. What do you guys use? Great White North

Midway has one. Don't have the number with me though. I was going to use a case but won't Sweets and other ammonia based cleaners give you a false reading on possible jacket fouling? Dave

Ammonia based solvents don't make as much mess of a "bore guide case" as one would think, as long as you clean it right away. I took some MTM bore guides and cut them down , then turned them to the cartridge dimension on my wood lathe. I'm going to buy some of that commercial stuff (teflon -type stuff) and make some more. Lottsa fun, and they work! catnthehat

I just bought a plastic guide from Midway, in 243, just to see how they did them. I plan to turn guides for my 280 and 270 WSM, as well as my brother's #3 in .223. Looks like I can do it with 1/2" nylon, which I have.
I've tried to make guides out of cartridges, and for me they work, sort of. Hard to keep them in place, whereas the plastic ones, with the O rings, stay in just fine. The plastic ones also are a big help in keeping the solvents off the wood.
A year ago I bought a guide for my M 700 270, and found that it fits my Pre-64, my Mauser 98, and my Rugers as well.
One thing that's confused me is that when you specify a certain caliber, the hole in the guide is about 20 thousands larger than the bore size. I can use my M-700 270 guide in my 25-06 on a Maauser action, and it works fine. I'm going to cut the ones I make much closer to bore size- seems like they would do a better job protecting the bore that way.
Any comments on this?

Sinclair International has been the source for my No1 bore guides. They have O rings to prevent solvent seepage into the action, although, the O rings eventually crack, however, any hardware store will have good replacements.

I switched to the Sinclair bore guides yrs. ago, for my # 1's. Now it's the only bore guides I use for 17, 22, 6mm, 27, 30, & 35 cal.
I am really satisfied with them.

They are trying to make you clean the chamber and the bore I think.
