Remco Monkey Gun - rifle, pistol and grenade launcher all rolled into one. Didn't know much about real guns when I was a kid. Had a single shot .22, probably a Winchester made Sears model but that was about it.
Now when I was a teenager - Colt Diamondback or K-22 was the gold standard for a .22 revolver, Colt Python for a centerfire. We were more into handguns than rifles. Finally got the Python and the K-22 but had to wait until I got out of the Army to be able to buy them.
Gunnery, gunnery, gunnery. Hit the target, all else is twaddle!

I remember looking at Field & Stream magazines (iirc) and lusting after a Weatherby Lazermark in .257
I cant remember for sure but it seems they used to advertise that you could buy one and sometime in the future get all your money back?
....dont remember too much about the ad but it was something along those lines.
I remember thinking back then I would rather have one in .264 WM but they didnt make it so I would have "settled" on the .257

I cant remember for sure but it seems they used to advertise that you could buy one and sometime in the future get all your money back? If I recall correctly, numerous banks offered a person of taking a new Wby Mk-V in lieu of interest. You make a deposit and leave it for a pre-determined length of time, and when the term was up, you got your money back. In the meantime, you had a new rifle... I remember thinking back then I would rather have one in .264 WM but they didnt make it so I would have "settled" on the .257 Ironically, I am the proud owner of a Weatherby Vanguard in .264 Win Mag.... The only one I've ever seen. I called Weatherby and they claimed they never made it. It appears to be a Howa made copy of a SAKO action. It is stamped "Weatherby, South Gate, Ca on the action. I wish I knew what it really is... I'm thinking it may have been an experimental sample... GH

You are absolutely correct with your memory. I can recall those ad's as well. Don't recall which bank was making the offer, but wish I had taken advantage of it!! Respects, Richard

I always wanted a Weatherby MKV. I wanted one of each caliber, because I was going to hunt the world. The only real way to hunt the world was with "Tomorrow's Rifle Today"! I still want a MKV and I could go down town today and buy one ---- but when you have had a dream for 45 years, why ruin it with money. May'be some day ---maybe!

they are still doing that with the bank loans and weatherbys. it's a bank in colorado, that will give you a weatherby for a large chunk of money invested and years later they send you all your money back, having given you the weatherby in lieu of interest earned.

I like to do my hunting BEFORE I pull the trigger! There is only one kind of dead, but there are many different kinds of wounded.

Spent hours with the Herter's catalog deciding what caliber Mark U-9 I would get. Never got one, and haven't seen a whole lot of them. I just bought 1 in 300 Winchester,Don't ask why

The first one I wanted was a 10/22. Ended up later with a marlin. After that it was Weatherby's 270 magnum, but later my first rifle was a 1895 Chilean Mauser 7X57, That is one I wished I had kept. It was actually an ok rifle, it had a full length fajen stock on it. Later I cut it down to look more like the weatherby forend. It shot decent 1 1/4", had very little recoil, bluing was really good and the stock looked good.

JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H
