bsa 1917: Sorry, but No, no boat paddle. This was @'90 and it was factory 77, tang safety, wood.
It IS THE ONLY rifle I've ever shot that HURT. I would have to check my personal notes @ grs, but it was IMR 4350 & 225 gr bullet. Velocity was little over 2900 fps.
My 8 RM shoots 220 grn. bullet with MORE powder, IMR 4831 & vel. of 2900+ fps. There was SOMETHING about that stock & their "recoil pad" leaves A LOT to be desired.
Just to explain a little more.

I'm glad to see the input and humor still coming in. Keep it up. This is quite amusing!! the 375 or the 338 are ringing my ears..But I still need an Elk Hunt for the fall of 2011!!!

I understand, I've shot some wood stocked savages in 300 win mag and 338 that I didn't want any part of after 3 shots and a bruised shoulder!!!!! Sometimes fit and stock design makes all the difference in the world. I know what the small red rubber recoil pad looks like on the old rugers too, OUCH!!!!
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

You want a 338 win mag, good choice as far as I'm concerned. All of mine have shot 3/4" groups with ease. They are so easy to load for. Another thing, if the recoil bothers you just load it down to 338-06 velocities: My current 338 (ruger m77 mkII) shoots pretty good and it doesn't punish the shooter too much.

CBB, if you haven't seen this it will make your ears perk up and your eyeballs pop out too. I think it is a good deal. If I didn't already have an awesome shooting elk rifle, I'd buy it in a heartbeat!!!!!! http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/4761820/Re_338#Post4761820

bsa: 10/4 - your are the FIRST one to state that you understand.
NORMALLY the 77 straight stock helps to reduce the FELT recoil, however IF it helped that 338, I wouldn't want to shoot it the other way.
I'm NOT turned off of the 77 but I haven't checked later models to compare.
The 77 "recol pad" is a JOKE on the larger magnums. The first 300 WM I had was a 77, that was about '80. It gave me a headache the 1st time I took it to the range.
Now that was the FIRST magnum I had had and I shot it 20 times, not w/o pausing. I wrote it off as not being use to a 300. Now I'm not so sure.
My post to cbb was to encourage him about proper fit or recoil pad, etc. not to turn him OFF of the 338 WM.

Ok, so my 2 big game calibers are 25-06 and 257 AI.. If I were to going hunt at most Elk,Muley,Whitetail and the occaisional PA bear..If I wanted a bigger, better caliber.. What should my 1 big choice be?? I will let the cat out of the bag now and give my opinion.. 280 or 280AI Forget the .280's, they are just 25's with beer muscles. Go for a .30 cal of 06' or magnum persuasion.

THE caliber or cartridge should be a rifle you shoot alot according to this piece by Jack Steel . . . The do-it-all rifle is not a myth, as many a seasoned rifleman knows. In fact, while the gunrags do a healthy business recommending good calibers for this, and best bullet for that, it's a fact that when flying lead doesn't have the intended results, it's the man behind the rifle that's almost certainly to blame. Show me a man who blames a miss on his rifle, and I'll show you a rifleman in need of polish, which leads to the primary reason behind choosing one good rifle -- polished skills.
Of course, the best way to polish skills is by shooting your chosen Betsy often and from real-life shooting positions. A rifle that feels right and doesn't kick like a mule goes a long way toward promoting regular practice. So does reloading for it, which will promote accuracy and increased familiarity.

Which is why my son may well be the benefactor of that 257AI.. when I'm dead!! Seriously though, I would like to have one big gun in the cabinet..

So, there are other cartridges than the 30-06, 338WM and 450 Marlin?
