I have been using a cheap tripod for the last 9 yrs, it is light weight and easy to carry but its time to get something better. I just bought a new 66mm kowa angled spotter and I am looking for tripod suggestions. I switched to the angled so I should be able to use a shorter tripod. What is the best compromise between quality and weight that will get the most out of a good spotter? I use it mostly for sheep, goats and caribou. Thanks

Slik 613 Pro cf

Slik sprint mini

If you are looking at the best bang for the buck, the 613 would be my choice.

I'm not fond of my Leupold spotter, but I really like the little Ewing tripod here:

Have been using it for several years, and it's working out great!

What about carbon fibre? Any experiences with it? Thanks

Sorry, I see now that the Slik 613 Pro cf is carbon fibre. Thanks

Damned expensive for a small weight savings.

Brad, I did a quick search on (fullsize)tripods.

3lb carbon fiber about $280-3lbs.
4lb aluminum (same size) $130-4lbs.
So it's about $150 for a full pound.

Don't tell me you didn't pay $50 to save an ounce with the 84 bolt knob.....(grin)

I'll second the Silk Brad recommended.

Sammer, my Slik is 2 lbs 13.0 oz's on the e-scale and costs $104.

But you're absolutely right, apples to apples there is some weight savings. Maybe a pound, maybe not. Regardless, in the gun world, most ounces are a LOT more expensive than that!

And no, I sure as heck didn't buy the Ti bolt knob... likely a 1/2 oz savings there at most.

Staying warm? laugh

Went and shot yesterday... got my truck stuck and took an hour to dig out. Interesting seeing what RL15 did at 12*F vs 80's this past summer... 75+ fps drop.

That model HAS been discontinued, but the SLIK Micro Mini with the split ball head replaced it, and they're about 100 bucks. I use that model and I have a Manfrotto Fluid Head on it.

It also fits in the long pockets on the CrewCab with about 5" to spare.

For the money, I think it's a lot of tripod. Great compromise in weight/size...

Aside, B&H's customer service is as good as it gets.

I use a Manfrotto 190xdb. They are not as expensive as carbon fiber, and it works for me.

That is the one I have been using the past couple years. Replaced the ballhead with one from Manfrotto and thats about it. Folds up super small but still tall enough to be the center pole for my bivy shelter if need be. I like the twist locks of the flip but I am rare in this I believe, but that isn't the first time my preference are less than congruent with the masses wink
