I made the trip back to 1800 many years ago. I used a Daisy Red Rider in .177 caliber when I went...

If you don't know where you are going to end up and the chances of Big Bear Country or Africa are equal to anyplace else, it seems to me to be crazy to take anything that might be found wanting in those areas.

I think the OP said north america, and for food. Since food storage in those days was horrific, I figured most food would be small game with occasional large game hence the 223 selection. also, can carry lots of ammo if needed. a 22 win mag rimfire would be a close second. If small game was off the menue and dangerous game was on it, 375 or 416 would be in order.

Given the parameters: USA in 1800 alone, with no need for human self-defense must carry all ammo to obtain food to defend against wild animals
Answer = .223 Remington
Caveat = need Barnes TSX bullets, otherwise chambering changes

7x57 with cleaning kit, and would hide my slingshot with several thousand 1/4" or 3/8" ball bearings and my recurve with a couple hundred arrows in my suitcase. Compass, small axe, folding saw, three good knives, expanded med kit, and good fishing kit would round it out. When do we go?
