John

Wouldn't it be the same as asking if the .375 JDJ is a big bore pistol with a 270-grain Speer boat tail round developing more than 2,300 ft./lbs of energy at the muzzle. That's about 600+ foot pounds of energy more than the 475 Linebaugh(roughly 1700 ft lbs).

Does it belong in the 357 Mag category or the .454/.475 as a hunting round?

If you take out the 375's you would have a very slow forum. It looks like 375 is the thing to talk about looking back a few pages.

I can go along with 9.3 and up, even though the 9.3 and 375 are mediums in my book. Big bore to me is over 40 cal.

I think it should be more of a Forum dealing with cartridges used for 'large and dangerous game' other than limited to the actual caliber of the rifle.

After all, a potent 'medium bore' such as the .375 H&H which can generate 4,500+ pound of energy does not qualify as a Big Bore, while a 45-70 generating 1,595 pound of energy meets the caliber specification of a Big Bore.

In this forum there seems to be a lot of threads dealing with the 375 Ruger/H&H and I find them to be interesting, even though they might not be a "true" Big Bore..

In light of my prior post on mediums, I stand corrected. I can see the argument that for our use in NA 375s and up are functionally 'big bores.'

This is one of the few Forums I follow regularly so lighter traffic would make it a lot less interesting.

From a purely commercial point of view 375 is where it starts.

The Remington African Big Game rifle starts at 375 H&H/RUM. The 375 is a different M70 to the smaller calibres.
Wby does not supply the cheaper fibreglass guns from 378 and up
The expensive Ruger bolt action starts at 375 H&H

Would be an easy way to draw the line. But wouldn't it be awkward discussing the .375 Wby, RUM and .378 Wby in one room and the .375 H&H in another ??

A "Medium Bore" forum would be nice.

Yes, one of life's most profound and perplexing questions. It's up there with questions like:

how to achieve world piece
global warming
the world economic situation
alternative energy sources
abortion
etc., etc....

yes, and traffic here is so heavy, there is no room for 9.3 and .375 banter... let them go clog the "hunting rifles" board that hardly gets any traffic...

and while we are at it, lets define 'custom' so we can weed out some rif-raff from the "custom rifles & wildcats" forum

confused

Intresting thoughts here. I certanly don't consider my .35 Whelen anywhere near a big bore and my .375 H & H as a maybe. To me the .375 H & H is big, but then most African hunters seem to use .400 or more.
